ELYSBURG — John Edward Yost, 90, of 163 W. Center St., Elysburg, passed away at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born March 9, 1923, in Shamokin, a son of the late William D. and Ellen B. (Roach) Yost. After his wedding, he moved to Elysburg.

He was a 1939 graduate of Coal Township High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from the D-Day beachhead through the Battle of the Bulge, till the end of the war, earning a Purple Heart with an oak leaf cluster.

On Aug. 14, 1946, in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Tharptown, he married Grace E. Woodley, who survives.

He first worked for 21 years at Knoebels Grove as a maintenance man, then for Marian Vought, and last for PP&L for 16 years.

He was a member of the Elysburg United Methodist Church, where he served as sexton and Sunday school teacher.

He was an active member of the Elysburg Fire Company as a firefighter and ambulance attendant. He was also a member of the American Legion, Bloomsburg, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by a son, John W. Yost and his wife, Noreen, of Albany, N.Y.; two daughters, Louise Retallack, of Catawissa, and Mya Hornberger and her husband, John, of Reading; four grandchildren, John W. Yost, Neil A. Yost, Michelle Gipple and her husband, Brian, and James Pratt, and five great-grandchildren, Cody, Alex, Miranda, Kabrina and Collin.

YOST — John Edward Yost, 90, of 163 W. Center St., Elysburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Farrow Funeral Home, 240 W. Chestnut St., Shamokin, with the Rev. Michelle Beissel presiding. Burial will be in the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
