MOUNT CARMEL — Elizabeth L. "Betty" Stepp-Stauffenberg, formerly of Shamokin, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Mount Carmel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Shamokin, a daughter of the late Benjamin W. and Margaret G. (Sweeney) Stepp.

Betty was a graduate of St. Edward's High School and attended Pennsylvania State University.

She was married to John P. Stauffenberg, who preceded her in death in 2006.

She was a member of the former St. Edward's Church, Shamokin, and a member of Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin.

Betty was well-known in the area and belonged to many civic, political and charitable organizations, most notably as secretary and trustee of the Bernie Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and as a charter member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Emerald Isle Chapter. She also served as president of Our Lady of Lourdes Band Club and president of the Shamokin Optimist Club. She was instrumental in organizing funds for the rebuilding of St. Edward's Church, serving as vice president of St. Edward's G.E.M.S.

Survivors include two sons, John H. Stauffenberg, of New Tripoli, and Mark G. Stauffenberg, of Shamokin; two grandsons, John C. and Mark A. Stauffenberg, both of New Tripoli, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Mary Stepp, Eleanor Carl and Joan Goode, and a brother, Benjamin (Tince) Stepp.

STEPP-STAUFFENBERG — Elizabeth L. "Betty" Stepp-Stauffenberg, a resident of Mount Carmel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Shamokin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mother Cabrini Church, 214 N. Shamokin St. at Webster Street, Shamokin. Interment will follow in St. Edward Cemetery, Coal Township. There will not be a viewing or visitation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to James Kelley Funeral Home, James F. Kelley, director, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township.
