MOUNT CARMEL ­— Joann M. DiRienzo, 72, formerly of 6 Mato Drive, Danville, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Mount Carmel Senior Living Community after an extended period of declining health.

She was born at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, June 21, 1941, a daughter of Helen (Stepanchick) Diak, of Mount Carmel, and the late Peter Diak. Joann was raised in Mount Carmel. She then moved to Bloomsburg in 1964 where she resided until 2011 when she moved to Danville.

She was a 1959 graduate of Mount Carmel High School.

She was married Aug. 1, 1964, in SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, to the late Robert J. DiRienzo, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 2002.

She was a member of Saint Columba Catholic Church in Bloomsburg.

She was a stay at home mom and worked as a secretary as well as a certified hairstylist.

Joann was a great animal lover and made donations to the SPCA throughout the area.

In addition to her mother, Helen Diak, of Mount Carmel, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Karen DiRienzo, of Bloomsburg; her beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Andrew and Daniela DiRienzo, also of Bloomsburg; cousins, Jeannie Schwalbe, of Missouri, Shirley Joyce Porter, of Mount Carmel, Lawrence Leonowicz, of Marion Heights, Nancy Leonowicz, of Elysburg, and Sherry Diak, Carol Sue Diak and Janie Diak, all of Lancaster; a brother-in-law, Richard DiRienzo and his wife, Eleanore, of Marion Heights; two sisters-in-law, Marion Myers and her husband, Donald, of Shamokin, and Rosalinda Canfield and her husband, Robert, of Philadelphia; a friend, Ronald Halkowicz, of Mount Carmel, and her beloved cat, Oliver.

In addition to her father and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Pasquale DiRienzo and his wife, Elsie, and Francis DiRienzo.


DIRIENZO — Joann M. DiRienzo, 72, formerly of 6 Mato Drive, Danville. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 21 at 9:30 a.m. at All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap, with the Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Hutsko officiating. There will not be a viewing. Divine liturgy will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Hillside SPCA, 51 SPCA Road., Pottsville 17901. C.J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mount Carmel, C.J.
