SHAMOKIN — John F. Smith, 83, of 517 Spurzheim St., died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at Golden Mansion Living Center, Sunbury.

Born in Shamokin, Feb. 19, 1931, he was a son of the late Freddie A. and Jennie Mae (Tiley) Smith.

John was a 1949 graduate of Shamokin High School. He served as a radioman first class in the U.S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam wars from 1951 through 1970. He returned to Shamokin and worked as a dispatcher for the city's fire and police departments.

He was a life member of the Rescue Fire Company and was a member of the Lower Anthracite Model Railroad Club.

Surviving is a brother, William Smith, of Aurora, Colo.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Fred and Meyrick Smith; sisters, Hulda Stark, Jane Smith, Ethel Smith, Panathea Walburn and Dorothy Seasock, and a companion of 23 years, Mio "Mitzi" Henninger.

SMITH — John F. Smith, 83, of 517 Spurzheim St., Shamokin. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut streets, Shamokin, with the Rev. James Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Coal Township. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service.
