SHAMOKIN — Eugenia A. "Jean" Sopp, 86, of 434 W. Mulberry St., went to be with the Lord, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014.

She was born Nov. 1, 1927, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late Hnat and Sophia (Pramuck) Karpiak. She resided most of her life in Shamokin.

Jean was a graduate of Shamokin High School and Bloomsburg State Teachers College. She attained her accreditation in elementary education and was employed by the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg at the former St. Joseph and West Catholic schools in Coal Township.

On July 16, 1949, in Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, she married Michael E. Sopp, with the Rev. Stephen Hotra officiating the ceremony. They were married for 57 years when her husband preceded her in death March 9, 2007.

She was a lifelong member of Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, and was a choir member for many years. She also was a member and former officer of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and the St. Anna Society.

Jean studied piano and organ with several concert and classical pianists earlier in her life, and later tutored many young students in music. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, and performed in many public and private concert programs throughout her life.

Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Michael D. Sopp, of Kulpmont, Jerome Sopp and his wife, Cindy, of Gowen City, and David Sopp, at home; a daughter, Alexandra "Sandy" Moratelli, of Elysburg; and two granddaughters, Jenna Sopp and Alexa Moratelli.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Michael, and John Karpiak, and a son-in-law, John Moratelli.

SOPP — Eugenia A. "Jean" Sopp, 86, of 434 W. Mulberry St., Shamokin. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, with the Rev. Mykola Ivanov as celebrant. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Coal Township. Viewing will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Stephen A. Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin.
