MOUNT CARMEL — Mary A. Sebastian, 98, formerly of 205 S. Poplar St., passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Mount Carmel Senior Living Community.

Born at home in Mount Carmel Aug. 2, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Annetta (Stitzer) Gahres. She was a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a 1936 graduate of Mount Carmel High School.

Mary was employed in the local garment industry as a seamstress.

On June 27, 1936, in Mount Carmel, she married the late John T. Sebastian, who preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1971.

She was a member of the Grace United Church of Christ, the choir and the Dorcas class. She was also a deacon on the consistory.

Survivors include five daughters, Margaret Lewullis and her husband William, of Aristes; Annetta Devine, of Elysburg; Joan Armstrong, of Smyrna, Del.; Mary Hanna, of Bradenton, Fla.; and Judith Sadusky and her husband Edward, of Gordon; 31 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernice Stanton; two brothers, William and Charles Gahres, and a sister, Celesta Strausser.

SEBASTIAN — Mary A. Sebastian, 98, formerly of 205 S. Poplar St., Mount Carmel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Grace United Church of Christ, 136 E. Third St., Mount Carmel, with Pastor Joan Brown officiating. Burial will be in Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Aristes. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Church of Christ, 136 E.
