MOUNT CARMEL — Gus L. Veach, 88, of 159 Virginia Lane, passed away due to cancer, surrounded by his loving family Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014.

He was born in Kulpmont, Dec. 2, 1925, a son of the late Gus and Anna (Polidoro) Veach Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Kulpmont.

Gus was a 1943 Kulpmont High School graduate. He enlisted in the service as a paratrooper and transitioned to Patton's Third Army, European Theater, for the remainder of his military service. Upon his return from military service he joined his father in the family service station business.

He met the former Rita Evans, to whom he was united in marriage in 1949. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Church of the Holy Angels, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and VFW, and a former member of Mount Carmel Area School Board.

Gus became interested in politics and served on the Mount Carmel Area School Board for 16 years. He was an active member of the community where he began his family and had three daughters, Patricia, Kathleen and Cynthia.

In later years, he enjoyed playing golf and did so often. He also loved the casinos, where he played Spanish 21 on the third base seat. He was employed by the county as a weight and measures inspector, working until his final days. He also served as a PIAA basketball official for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Rita; three daughters, Patricia Johnson, Kathleen Vitacco and Cynthia Varmecky; seven grandchildren, Joy, Michael and Meghan Vitacco, Aaron and Andrew Johnson, Matthew and Christopher Varmecky; two great-grandchildren, Heath and Lake Dodson; a sister, Marie Chimel; and three sons-in-law, Howard Johnson, Michael Vitacco and Richard Varmecky.


VEACH — Gus L. Veach, 88, of 159 Virginia Lane, Kulpmont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of the Holy Angels, 855 Scott St., Kulpmont, with the Rev. Raymond Orloski as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Kulpmont. Viewing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Christian wake at 8 p.m., and 9 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the C.J.
