MOUNT CARMEL — Russell Robert Barella, 74, of 505 S. Hickory St., passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at home after battling cancer for nine years.

Born Oct. 10, 1938, in Mount Carmel, he was a son of Carrie (Procopio) Barella and the late Frank Barella.

He was a 1956 graduate of Mount Carmel Catholic High School. He graduated from Greer Technical Institute of Chicago in 1959 with a degree in diesel engineering.

On June 25, 1960, he was married by Monsignor Francis Dinkel in St. Peter's Church to Ramona (Procopio) Barella, who survives.

In 1960, Russell started his career as a diesel mechanic for the state of Pennsylvania. He then became a co-owner of Barella's Auto and Diesel Garage until 1967. Russell was then employed for Mack Truck Distributors in Paxinos, Schuylkill Haven and Reading for a total of 33 years. He retired in May 2000 as a sales manager for Mack Trucks.

He was a member of the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and was a former member of St. Peter's Church. Russell was an accomplished accordion player in the 1950s. He played with Frankie's Trio at many weddings, Dollar Sundays and New Year's Eve parties.

In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nadine and Dean Shott, of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandsons, Jared, Ian and Austin Shott; a brother, Frank Barella Jr., of Mount Carmel; two godsons, Frank Barella, of Allentown, and Ronald Procopio, of Reading, and several nieces and nephews.

BARELLA — Russell Robert Barella, 74, of 505 S. Hickory St., Mount Carmel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Our Lady, Mount Carmel, with the Rev. Francis Karwacki officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township. There will be no viewing at the request of the deceased. Visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of the mass at the church. The Joseph J. Stutz III Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, supervisor, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of the flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Church of Our Lady, 47 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, PA 17851.
