KULPMONT — Shirley R. Little, 85, formerly of Roosevelt Court, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at her daughter's residence at 1438 Scott St., Kulpmont.

Born in Kulpmont, June 14, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Norman E. and Emma (Hess) Hubler.
She was a lifelong resident of Kulpmont except for three years while she served as a U.S. Army nurse in military hospitals in the U.S. and Japan.
On Aug. 1, 1953, in St. John's Reformed Church, Shamokin, she married James F. Little, who preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1990.
Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Kulpmont High School and a 1949 graduate of Ashland State Hospital School of Nursing. She served as a general duty nurse in the Army from June 20, 1953 until May 13, 1956. She received the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan and attained the rank of first lieutenant.
She was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Kulpmont, and was a charter member of the West End Ladies Auxiliary where she served as past president for 12 years. She also was a charter member of Mended Hearts of Central PA Chapter 126 in Danville, American Legion Post 231 in Kulpmont, VFW Post 298 in Danville, Order of Eastern Star in Shamokin, Neumanites Association in Kulpmont where she served as president in 1994, a past member of the Mount Carmel Area School Board, serving from 1981 to 1985, a past member of Kulpmont Council, serving from 1992 to 2004, where she also served as president from 1998 to 1999 and again in 2004, all in the town that she passionately loved and served.
Shirley was instrumental in saving the Kulpmont Elementary School which made a home for LIFE Geisinger and Luzerne School of Nursing as well as Roosevelt Court, where she lived for 12 years and had many friends whom she held near to her heart.
The greatest loves of her life were her two devoted grandsons, Patrick and Adam. They brought her much joy in life, took care of her and were by her side until her death.
Surviving are her daughter, Bonita "Bonnie" A. Burns and her husband, John, of Kulpmont; two grandsons, Patrick and Adam Burns; a sister, Evelyn Riedel, of Mount Carmel; a sister-in-law, Louise Hubler, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Norman and Willard Hubler.
LITTLE — Shirley R. Little, 85, formerly of Roosevelt Court, Kulpmont. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at C.J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 1053 Chestnut St., Kulpmont, with the Rev. Alfred J. Bashore officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home.
