Daren Whiting, 45, died at his home in Moose Creek, Alaska, on Jan. 21, 2013.
Daren and his sons, Vince Whiting, 19, and Christian Whiting, 17, moved to Alaska in 2009 in search of their dreams. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Daren worked in the construction industry his entire life. "Dirt," he would say, "is in my blood."
He worked in his family-owned construction company until his move to Alaska. At the time of his passing, he worked for Glen Weber Construction. Previously he worked for the Alaska Department of Transportation.
He leaves heart-broken those who loved him, but the broken hearts will be mended by memories of his humor, devotion, loyalty, and unconditional love.
He taught his sons valuable lessons. He never passed by a stranded car. He and his sons would stop to render help. He wouldn't pass by a panhandler. He would give him his last dollar, and he would remember to say "I love you" to those he loved.
Being a single dad, Daren's boys were the light of his life.
He is survived by his sons; his mother, Susie Whiting; his siblings, Mark (Dawna) Whiting, Susan (Brett) Marrott, Shannon (Stephan) Graves, Sheree (Jon) Farr, Rainee (Shane) Baldwin, and Haley (Jereme) Sorensen.
His father, Dan Whiting, preceded him in death.
There will be a celebration of Daren's life at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Pike's Waterfront Lodge. Daren's family would like to invite all friends, family and work associates to join them.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to aid Daren's boys. Donations can be made at Wells Fargo Bank to the Daren Whiting Memorial Account No. 3805190190.
