Eugenia "Jean" Raferia Risdal, 92, passed away June 9, 2013, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. Until her brief illness three weeks ago, she lived independently in her home in Anchorage. Jean was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Bedford, Ohio. She was raised on her family's farm in East Canton, Ohio. She married Thomas Risdal Sr. in 1945. They were married for 50 years before his passing.
Jean served her country as a member of the United States Army
, and is a World War II
veteran. Jean moved to Alaska in 1960 with her family, and lived in Metlakatla, Delta Junction, Adak, Anderson and Anchorage. Jean taught high school business classes in Delta Junction, Adak and Anderson in the 1970s and '80s. She volunteered as an EMT with the American Red Cross and at Providence Hospital for many years. She helped deliver babies in Metlakatla and provided first aid care for burn victims and others in need of emergency care on Annette Island.
Jean is preceded in death by her father, Nick Tataru; mother, Rose Tataru; brother, John Tataru; and husband, Thomas Risdal Sr.
She is survived by her children, Priscilla (David) Faulkner, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Kathleen Oden, of Boise Idaho; Beverly (Earl) McCracken, of Anchorage; and Thomas (Jeanie Jacobs) Risdal Jr., of Fairbanks; grandchildren, Jason Faulkner (Lydia), Jill Singleton (M. Brian), Alexander Oden, Gregory Oden, Joseph McCracken (Meridith); great-grandchildren, Makiya and Malique Singleton, Sheyanne and Alexa McCracken.
