Helen Marie Knapp passed away Feb. 19, 2013, peacefully at home with her family in attendance.
She was born the second of three children to Harold and Emma Clement on Feb. 27, 1921, in Aberdeen, S.D. When Helen was
1 1/2, her family moved to Everett, Wash., where she spent her formative years.
Helen met Woodrow Knapp in Everett, and they were married on Feb. 2, 1942. On June 20, 1943, their only child, June Pearl, was born.
In 1955, Woody was working for Sears when they offered him the chance to transfer to Fairbanks. They took the offer and set off for Alaska, where they fell in love with the land and never left.
Helen worked for several places in town, always involved in crafts and sewing. She worked for The House of Fabrics, Hawks Furs, Sario Furs and Martin Victor Furs as a fur finisher, and finished her working career at The Carousel Kids Store. She was a member of Pioneers of Alaska, Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
Helen loved crafts of all kinds. She crocheted afghans for everyone she knew and made baby quilts for all the new babies of her daughter's friends. If you were lucky enough to receive one of her handmade cards, you realized how beautiful they were.
Her family will miss her happy face, great energy and all the loving things she did for each one of us. She was the greatest cook and could make anyone feel at home in her home. She sewed for all the kids, and taught everyone the kind and loving way that she was. She will be missed forever.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Woodrow; parents, Harold and Emma Clement; sister, Dorthey; and brother, Charles.
She is survived by her daughter, June Oldham (Bill); grandchildren, Woody Green (Karin), Heather Szmyd (Bill), of Fairbanks; Justin Oldham (Beth), of Anchorage; and June Benbrook (David), of Wash.; great-grandchildren, Chelsie, Rachael, Stephanie (Dave), Bobbie, Brett, Brandon (Lacy), William and Charles; and great-great-grandchildren, Christopher, Madison and Levi.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in North Pole. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to

Arrangements have been entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
