Irene Katherine Solomon, 79, beloved mother, wife, grandma, great-grandma, auntie and friend left us on Oct. 26, 2012, at her home along the Yukon River in Kaltag. She was laid to rest Oct. 30, 2012, in Kaltag.
Irene was born July 18, 1933, to Martha Elizabeth Nickoli (Sheroski) and Eugene Nickoli in Kaltag. She attended school to the fifth grade at the Holy Cross Mission School, until her dad, Eugene, came by boat to take her back home to Kaltag.
Irene married Alexander Solomon Jr. on Oct. 2, 1950, in Nulato. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Irene, along with her husband, Alex, lived a subsistence lifestyle. Every summer as their children were growing up, they would spend the summers at their fish camp, located 25 miles below Kaltag, where they would harvest fish and other foods for the winter months.
Irene not only lived a subsistence lifestyle, but she greatly enjoyed her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She also enjoyed knitting socks and gloves and sharing those with her family and friends.
She was a member of the women's club, also known as the Busy Beaver's Club. Irene enjoyed watching Western movies, "The Price is Right" game show and doing word-search puzzles.
Irene is survived by her husband, Alexander Solomon Jr. of Kaltag; nieces, Thelma (Lawrence) Saunders of Kaltag; Jenny (David) Pelkola of Galena, Nathalaa (George) Bahr of Anchorage, Theresa Solomon of Washington state, and many other nieces and nephews; two sisters-n law, Olga Solomon and Lidwin Alexie-Solomon of Kaltag; her children, Eleanor Maillelle of Galena, Gabe (Dorothy) Solomon of Kaltag, Mike (Jackie) Solomon of Fairbanks, Veronica (Richard) Miller of Galena, Herbert Solomon of Kaltag, Susan (Arne) Erickson of Galena, and Daniel (Louise) Solomon, of Eagle River; grandchildren, Marlon Maillelle, Corrine (Torsten) Franzen, Evelyn, Arlene and Gary Joe (who cared for them in their later years), Aaron, Arthur, Allen, Alexander, Anthony Solomon, Felicia Alexie, Michelle, Michael, Marcia Solomon, Cory, Caleb, Jacob, Jonathon Miller, Agatha, Elsie, Diloola, Edwin Erickson, Tamberlyn, Timothy, Alvin Solomon; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her three children, Martha Elizabeth Solomon, Archie (Lillian) Solomon, and Alvin Solomon; grandson, Brian Maillelle; and her two brothers, Arthur and Raymond Nickoli.
Irene was the last of her siblings to pass. She was a very humble and quiet person, and enjoyed the companionship of her family and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all, but her memories will forever linger on in our hearts.
