Anita J. Whitney, 87, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away at her home surrounded by her family on June 11, 2013. Born Jan. 23, 1926, in Fort Smith, Ark., Anita graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work; and Arizona State University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in education and master's degree in educational psychology.

She enjoyed using her educational background to work with underprivileged children and adolescents and with homeless youths.
She met and married Guy Whitney, in Fairbanks, in 1960. They raised their three children in Fairbanks until retirement in 1990, then relocated to Scottsdale to be with two of their children. While in Arizona, Anita was a regular volunteer with Gammage,
, Volunteer IRS preparation, the Arizona Women's Initiative and many other charities as they would call on her. She also made time to be a special grandmother to her grandchildren. She has left a legacy of love and caring for them.
Anita is survived by her husband, Guy; her four children, Warren Whitney, Lynn Whitney (Shachin) Parker, Jane Whitney, Marsha May; grandchildren: Allie Whitney, Jake Whitney, Mady Whitney, Nikhil Parker, Rashmi Parker, Jamie Millard, Katrina Millard, Paige Daniels, Ricky Daniels, Allison Dancer and Deniese Spencer; and her great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. June 22, 2013, at Scottsdale Bible Chapel, 7901 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, Ariz. Memorial gifts may be made to
