Jeff was born Dec. 24, 1956, in Watertown, S.D., to Delbert and Bernadette Sanderson. Being the middle child of seven boys, there was never a dull moment in the Sanderson family. From backyard wrestling, to racing cars through fields, the Sanderson boys were always getting into something.
Then as a teenager, Jeff's adventurous side brought him to Fairbanks, where he would spend the summers working with his older brother, Chuck. Jeff loved it. He made Fairbanks his home in 1976, at the age of 19, with his lifelong friend, Chris Chambers.
He worked at Dean's Glass and Salvage until 1981, followed by 12-week hitches in Prudhoe Bay working as a tireman for the Operators Local 302. Jeff later went back to the glass industry and worked at several glass shops around town, ending with Action Auto Parts and Glass.
He married Dawn Ducommun in 1984, and on July 25, 1986, he got the feel for fatherhood with the birth of his son, Gary. Kristine, his redheaded angel, was born a few short years later in 1989. And in 2011, he acquired the title "Grandpa" when his grandson, Braylon, entered this world.
Hunting and fishing filled Jeff's life with joy. Whether it was buffalo hunting in McGrath or pheasant hunting back in Iowa, that was truly his passion. He fished the waters of Valdez and Homer, as well as a number of lakes and rivers. However, he loved nothing more than pike fishing and duck hunting in the Minto Flats. If Jeff wasn't working, he was in the great outdoors with his family and friends.
Jeff's more recent pastimes included: watching football, especially his Minnesota Vikings; playing pool at the Club Manchu; helping his son work on his corvette; catching up with his mother and daughter on the phone; and anything you could put a bet on!
Anyone who knew Jeff knows he had a heart of gold and always offered a helping hand when he could. He enjoyed being surrounded by the ones he loved, and his stories could always fill a room with laughter. Jeff was a great man, yet a simple man. He could make the most out of everything.
The Fairbanks community has not only lost a dad, son, brother, uncle and grandpa, but the best "glassman" this town had to offer. He will forever be loved and missed by those who knew him.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Bernadette Sanderson, and his longtime friend, Jimmy Zirger.
He is survived by his son, Gary Sanderson (Leigh), and his grandson, Braylon Paul Sanderson, all of Fairbanks; daughter, Kristine and Michael Fisher, of Colorado; brothers, Chuck Sanderson, of Fairbanks; Joe and Linda Sanderson, Robert Sanderson of Minnesota; Gary Sanderson (Becky), Delbert and Laurie Sanderson, and Mike Sanderson all of Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 23, 2013, located at the Elks Lodge Antler Room, 1003 Pioneer Road Fairbanks, Alaska. Feel free to bring a dish and a good ol' memory of him.
