Raymond Szmyd Obituary
Raymond Szmyd, 94, of Fairbanks, departed this world Nov. 10, 2013 at Denali Center, with his wife, Doris, at his side. Ray was born Feb. 7, 1919, to Joseph and Josephine Szmyd of Cleveland, Ohio. Ray is the eldest child of seven and survived all his siblings.
When WWII started, Ray joined the U.S. Army and became a sergeant while in the infantry. During his tour, he received a Bronze Star medal and was honorably discharged after he was injured in the war. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Alaska where he met his future bride, Doris. They made their home in Interior Alaska with many family members and friends. Ray and Doris were just shy of being married for 65 years, and Doris still lives at the home they shared before Ray moved to Denali Center.
Ray is survived by his wife, Doris Szmyd; sisters-in-law, Edith Szmyd and Milanka Szmyd; nieces and their spouces, Cynthia and Bill Seeman, Gloria and Dan Finney; nephews and spouces, Steven and Donna Szmyd, Timothy and Nancy Szmyd, Scott and Minnie Szmyd, Joseph Szmyd, Tony Szmyd and Marty and Maria Szmyd; as well as numerous other family members throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Szmyd; his brothers, Edward, Alexander and Robert, and his sisters, Helen and Julia.
The family would like to thank the employees at the Denali Center for taking care of Doris' husband during his time of need.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
