Virgil W. "Mack" McConnell, 88, of Belleville, Ill., born Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1925, in Mountain View, Mo., died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Dammert Geriatric Center in Belleville, Ill.|
Virgil was a sergeant major (E9) for the U.S. Navy and Army, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Belleville, Ill., Tanana Lodge No. 3 AF & AM, Fairbanks; Scottish Rite Bodies, Alaska Shriners, past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star (O.E.S.) of Alaska, Rob Morris No. 98 O.E.S.; Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 4, NRA, VFW of Fairbanks, and also past assistant chief of police of Fairbanks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Essie nee Harvill McConnell; daughter, Arna Jane Trotter; brother, Wayland McConnell, and sister, Edna McConnell.
Surviving are his wife, Jane nee Cluck McConnell, of Belleville, Ill; brother, Vern E. McConnell, of Fairbanks; grandson, Scott M. (Patty) Thompson, of Belleville; great-grandchildren, Zach Thompson, Zara Thompson; and nieces, Linda (Charles) Davenport and Jackie Lucas.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. during visitation on Monday, April 28 at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill., and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at Union United Methodist Church in Belleville, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Union United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ed Weston officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
An Eastern Star Service will be held that evening at 7 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service.
