Our beloved mom, grandma, aunt, sister and friend, Alice Ambrose, passed away June 9, 2013. Alice was born July 7, 1925, to Susie Williams and Frank Simon, in Alatna.
She is survived by her children, Ella (Lester) Sam, Esther (Pat) McCarty, Lige, Millie, Jack and John (Brenda) Ambrose; brothers, Bill (Madeline) Williams, Ralph Williams, James Williams and George Linus; sisters, Rita (Williams) Koyukuk and Margaret (Wilmer) Beetus; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ambrose; children, Gilbert, Art, Timothy (TJ) James, Florence and Carol Ann; siblings, Josephine, Paul, Ralph, and Irene; grandchildren, Leslie, Charles, Crystal, Frank, Aaron and Harvey; and her beloved, dog Trixie.
After Art passed away, she continued to raise their 10 children off the land she loved and cherished by fishing, hunting, gathering food, tanning skins, gardening, knitting and sewing. Alice taught her children how to live off the land and Denaakk'e. She taught young people Native songs and enjoyed telling stories. She was well known for making Native songs for potlatch.
In the summer, she held a 4-H camp, with the help of her children and grandchildren, and many great lessons of subsistence living; lessons taught and learned year after year. Her smoke-house was always full and was a place where many stopped to visit. Her home was never locked and was open to all to visit and eat.
Her heart and love was home, but Alice "Du'dodaalno" needed additional care and the help and loving attention of the caregivers at Denali Center is much appreciated. Words cannot express our appreciation for taking such good care of our mom, grandma, aunt, sister and friend.
Visitation will be at noon today, June 11, 2013, at Chapel of Chimes. A Wrights Air Service charter will leave for Hughes at 2 p.m.
Pending services for Alice "Du'dodaalno" and final resting place will be in Hughes, followed by a celebration of her life.
