Andrew Quainton Obituary

Andrew Cecil Lloyd Quainton, 36, of Fairbanks, died Dec. 24, 2012, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Andrew was born April 14, 1976, in Evanston, Ill. He graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, with a bachelor's degree in urban studies. After several years split between New York and Chicago, he moved to Fairbanks in 2003, where he attended graduate school at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
From June 2004 to October 2011, Andrew worked in development and membership at the Museum of the North. From November 2011 to July 2012, he was development director for the Interior AIDS Association of Alaska. From July until recently, he worked with the Fairbanks Concert Association as operations director.
Andrew was active in the Fairbanks community. He served as a board member, and later as development director, for the Interior AIDS Association, vice chairman of the Fairbanks Opera Guild, board member of the Interior Democrats and other charitable organizations.
He was an enthusiastic fan of college and pro football. Inspired by a lengthy stay in Scandinavia, he learned to speak, read and write Norwegian. Norwegian studies remained a constant delight.
Andrew passionately supported KUAC Public Broadcasting with his time, talent and treasure for many years, first donating as a student at UAF in 2004, and volunteering to answer phones during the KUAC-FM Fall Fundraiser.
He strengthened his engagement as he began "pitching" on-air and proclaiming his love for opera. Andrew became a member of the KUAC Community Advisory Council in 2008, applied for a second three year term, and was elected chairman of the CAC in 2011.
Andrew continued his passionate support by becoming a member of KUAC's Art Buswell Society in 2010, a major donor society that recognizes donors who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more to support the public broadcasting mission in Alaska.
Andrew is survived by his parents, Catherine Quainton, of McHenry, Ill., and the Rev. Rodney Quainton (Nanci Priest), of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; sisters, Sarah Quainton (Capulet Poehner), of Los Angeles, and Jennifer Quainton (Matthew Branscome), of New York; step-brother, Drew Priest-Grochowski, of Chicago; an aunt and uncle; several cousins; two nieces; and a nephew.
A memorial and celebration of life honoring Andrew was held Dec. 28, 2012, at Gambardella's Pasta Bella. It was "standing room only" as friends and loved ones joined to honor and remember Andrew.
A family memorial is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2013, at St. Mark's Church in Evanston Ill., where Andrew's parents were married and he was baptized.
A summer memorial in Fairbanks is scheduled for June 23, 2013.
For those wishing to make a donation in Andrew's memory, please direct it to KUAC c/o Gretchen Gordon, 312 Tanana Drive, Fairbanks 99775-5620.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
