Charles Kirk Smith, 61, of North Pole, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2012, at Bassett Army Community Hospital after a long extended illness.

Charles was born Dec. 2, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa.
He joined the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 3, 1970, and served his country honorably until his retirement after 24 years as CMSgt. on Aug. 31, 1994. While serving his country, Charles was a high voltage electrician, civil engineering manager, electrical superintendent and electrical systems craftsman.
Charles married his wife, Lita, on June 2, 1972, in Angeles City, Philippines. Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and adored every moment he had with his grandkids.
His family said, "Thanks to all the friends of Charles for their support and kindness during this time."
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Lita Smith, of North Pole; son and daughter-in-law, John and Dana Smith, of Richland, Mich.; son, David Smith, of North Pole; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Quyana Smith, of Anchorage; brother, James Smith, of Woodbury, Minn.; sister, Karen Palbicki, of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; sister, Diane DeToye, of Danville, Ill.; sister, Velda Smith, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; brother, Paul Metz, of Davenport, Iowa; sister, Roberta Smith, of Chicago; granddaughters, Alexis Smith, of Richland, Mich., Hailey Smith, of Richland, Mich., Kaitlyn Smith, of North Pole, and Emily Loucy, of Avondale, Ariz.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, John Kirk Smith; and mother, Bernice Louise Loulter.
Funeral services with Air Force honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the Eielson Air Force Base Chapel. Charles will lie in state from noon until 1:30 p.m. before services in the chapel.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
