On Sept. 24, 2013, God came and took our one and only son and brother, Ernest D. Carroll, 61, to his heavenly home. He left us unexpectedly, and our hearts are heavy and sad; he left us too soon. But we know he's in God's eternal home with his father and brothers. |
Ernie dear was a certified chef, a master at whipping up anything on the menu, and a skilled ivory carver. He graduated from Lathop High School in 1972, attended Bates College in Tacoma, Wash., and received a certification in the culinary arts field. While at school, he earned money by catering large weddings and events in the Tacoma area. He collected a photo album of the catering events and proudly showed this to his family and friends.
Ernie also worked on the North Slope for several years, cooking and baking. He had several jobs as a cook in the Interior, including at the Tiki Cove restaurant, June's Diner and in Central. He catered his sister Deborah's wedding.
Recently, he was a home care provider to his uncle, Calvin Carroll.
He was a good dog handler for his cousin, Josh Cadzow. Ernie cooked and baked for many functions in Fort Yukon, volunteering his time and talent. He always was willing to help out his neighbors, friends and family.
His humor was a big part of his character; he always had a funny story to tell. Ernie was happiest out on the river or when traveling with his dad to Box Car or 17 Mile. He lived a subsistence lifestyle in Birch Creek and Fort Yukon. He always provided Native food to his mom, family and friends.
He will be sorely missed by many friends and cousins in Carrollville. He leaves behind many close friends and relatives, including Mary James (Birch Creek) and family, Hannah and Bryan James, Dawn Foster (Central) and Keith James, his fishing partner; and Mike Nichols.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret; sisters, Bonnie (Steve) Ginnis, Sarah (Thomas) Knudson, Margaret Jr., Deborah, Dorothy, Brenda, and Patricia (Robert) Carroll; children, Katelyn Englishoe and Elvis (Vanessa) James; grandchildren, Dakota, Winston, baby Jesse James, and Melissa; nieces and nephews, Melody Carroll and family, Steve Ginnis ll (Nicole) and son; Roxy Carroll (Stewart), Robert Knudson (Saiyrai) and sons, Robert and Stephen; Roxanne Knudson and Caleb; uncles and aunts, Delores (Dave) Sloan, Fannie Booth, Calvin Carroll, Richard and Eva Carroll, Doris Ward, Jessie Carroll and Alice Carroll, of Circle.
Ernie was preceded in death by his father, Joseph S. Carroll Sr.; brothers, Joseph Jr., Charles, James, Lawrence, Roderick, Charles and Clifton Carroll (twins), Albert Carroll Sr., Ann and Terry Moran, James Ward, Harry Carroll Sr., Mabel Carroll; and good friends, Frenchy Drouin, Nick and Mary Nichols; grandparents, James and Fannie Carroll, and Charlie and Hannah Stevens.
Funeral services were held Oct. 1, 2013, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial services was at the Hudson Bay Cemetery, and a potlatch followed at the Tribal Community Hall.
