Eugene Robert Beckley, 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Nov. 1, 2012. Gene was born on March 25, 1926, in California, where he grew up. |
He was the youngest of 5 brothers, and served in the Merchant Marines.
After serving, he became a master gardener, working in nurseries in Calif.
Gene married Betty Lou Fitch on Sept. 1, 1962.
In the summer of 1964, they packed up their family and drove the Alaska Highway to pursue Betty Lou's teaching career.
Gene, Betty and their 3 children lived in many villages that Betty taught in, including Chestochina, Mentasta, Dot Lake, Tetlin and Tok. After retiring, they made their home in Fairbanks.
Gene enjoyed growing house plants, watching tennis and baseball, and keeping a close watch on the political news.
Gene had a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou; his parents, and 4 brothers.
He is survived by sons, Craig (Paula) Beckley, and Alan Beckley; daughter, Sandra (Hugh) Bishop; and grandchildren Erika, Kevin, Johnathan, Mathew, Melinda and Carissa.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
