Helen Estelle Parsons, 74, of Fairbanks, died Nov. 4, 2013; she passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.|
Helen was born July 17, 1939, to Edward and Helen Higgins. She was born and raised in Hyannis, Mass. During her childhood, she loved taking trips to Cape Cod with her brother, Edward "Bubba," and her sister, Marion.
On March 30, 1963, Helen married Jerry Parsons; together, they started their family and had four children: Donald, Jerry, Juanita and David. Helen loved being at home with her children and created a very loving relationship with all of them. Jerry's career in the Air Force meant they moved a lot, and Helen was Mom and Dad to the kids sometimes. Being the strong, resilient woman she was, this came as no hardship to her.
In 1971, Helen and the kids came to Alaska, which was where her husband was stationed. Helen loved Alaska for its mild summers and no exotic reptiles or spiders. Her visits back to Massachusetts were always exciting for her and she never stopped missing her family back home, but she was happiest when she was back in Alaska with her children and grandchildren.
In 1990, her daughter, Juanita, suddenly passed away. Even through her heartache and grief, Helen was able to gather enough strength to raise her granddaughter. Helen loved her children and grandchildren to no end. They were the joy and light of her life. We will never forget the unconditional love that she gave each and every one of us.
Helen worked in the service industry most of her life and spent more than 25 years at the Westmark Hotel in Fairbanks. In her spare time, Helen loved to play Bingo, and if it was too cold out, she could be found at home doing a puzzle or needlepoint. During the summers, she spent as much time outdoors as she could, relaxing on the porch or tending to the lawn and her flowers.
Helen will be remembered for her ability to always listen with an open mind and heart, but also for her stern attitude to never put up with anyone's "BS."
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Parsons; her parents, Edward and Helen Higgins; brother, Edward "Bubba" Higgins; and her daughter, Juanita Parsons.
She is survived by her sister, Marion Pyy; her sons, Donald (Marcy) Parsons, Jerry (Tresa) Parsons and David (April) Parsons; grandchildren, Jennifer, Torrance, Amanda, Tyler, Trevor "Boo" and Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Michael, Avery and Karah; as well as several nieces and nephews.
At her request, she will be cremated, and there are no funeral services planned. At a later date, her son Jerry will take her and her husband's ashes and spread them at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to help with funeral expenses and donations may be made at Alaska USA, account number 1790489.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fairbanks Funeral Home.
