Longtime Fairbanks resident Jackie Goering passed away June 5, 2012, of natural causes. Jacqueline Jeanne Goering was born May 26, 1935, in Newton, Kan. She went to school in Moundridge, Kan., where she met John Goering and married him on June 10, 1956.|
As a young married couple, they moved to Madison, Wis., where John completed his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. After John's studies were complete, he accepted a professorship at the University of Alaska and they moved to Bermuda for a short time where John conducted marine research before settling in Fairbanks in 1963. The plan was to stay in Fairbanks for three years, but Fairbanks and the university grew on the couple, and before they knew it they had been in Fairbanks nearly 50 years.
Jackie taught as a substitute teacher for some 25 years at the elementary level, mostly at University Park, Barnette and Weller elementary school. She was an involved parent who spent many hours in the classrooms of her three boys. In addition to teaching and maintaining a home life, she established "Goering Business Services," which allowed her to use her medical stenography skills to help local medical offices.
Over the years Jackie and John were privileged to enjoy travel to many foreign destinations as John's occupation as a marine scientist took him to faraway places. In their later years they enjoyed annual vacations in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a location that John had first visited during a scientific cruise early on in his career.
Jackie's hobbies included reading, swimming, traveling and attending the various arts events available in Fairbanks. She loved to entertain and had numerous dinners at their house off Farmers Loop. She was a community and university volunteer and spent many years assisting various organizations, including the University Women's Association, the Fairbanks Drama Association, and the Friends of the University of Alaska Museum of the North.
Jackie passed away peacefully in the early morning of June 5, 2012, after battling cancer for three years. Shortly before her death she celebrated her 77th birthday surrounded by friends and family and remarked, "It was better than I thought it would be." And, she would have smiled had she known she died on the same day as the transit of Venus.
Jackie is survived by her husband, John, of Fairbanks; sons Doug (Chun Hua) and Greg (Celeste) of Fairbanks; son Brent (Tina) of Anchorage; granddaughter Anne of Fairbanks; grandson Spencer of Anchorage; her mother, Hilda Goering of Moundridge, Kan.; and younger brothers Gordon and Wayne, both of Kansas.
