Jeffrey Lynn Kennedy passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2014, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with his mother, Bea Kennedy, by his side.|
Jeffrey was born April 10, 1951, in Seattle. Bea flew to pick him up when he was 9 days old. Jeffrey was the biggest blessing to his parents, Vernon and Beatrice Kennedy. Jeffrey was a special child from the very beginning.
Jeffrey excelled in sports. He competed in Special Olympics for many years in track and field, basketball, swimming and bowling in the local and state games, winning many medals in all those divisions. In 1979, Jeffrey competed in the Fifth International Special Olympics Summer Games in New York, placing fourth in the long jump, and in 1987 won the title of "Male Athlete of the Year" in the Tanana Valley Special Olympics.
In his later years, Jeff stayed active, going to the Mary Siah pool with his Parks and Recreation friends, and would have a blast. On the way, he would always give the bus driver directions: "Turn here, turn right there." He knew where he was going, and made sure the driver knew the way.
He loved all animals. Riding horses at the Windemere Farms was one of his favorite pastimes. He liked going to dances and socializing with his friends at the Elks Club. He loved to travel with his parents and visit his family. Besides finding channel 45 to watch "Bonanza," his particular favorite show, music was Jeffrey's everyday special activity. He would sing karaoke with great vigor. He would grab his mike and sing along with the Mamas and the Papas, or sing to "The Sound of Music" as he played the video tape.
Jeffrey was happy and was very loving to all people in his life. During the summer, Jeffrey loved to sit in the swing in the front yard with a Pepsi in hand and wave at passing cars and people walking by. He always had a big smile, a "hello" and a hug for you. He loved to take your picture before you left.
Bob Weinberg was Jeffrey's "big brother" and they loved each other all these years. Jeffrey, and all the love he gave, will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Kennedy, on May 23, 2011.
A celebration of life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Tanana Valley Special Olympics (474-0568) in Jeffrey's memory, or to
Arrangements are entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
