LeNora Conkle Obituary

LeNora Josephine Quint Huntley Conkle, 103, passed away at the Fairbanks Pioneers Home on Feb. 7, 2013. LeNora was born near Hazelton, Idaho, on Aug. 10, 1909. She was third of 10 children born to Jesse and Olga Quint.
She had three children from an early marriage, Glen, Dick and Fay. LeNora came to Alaska in June 1946, with Clement "Bud" Conkle, both in their mid-30s. They spent several years in Fairbanks, then decided Tanada Lake in the Wrangell Mountains was the place for them. A surprise son, Colin Weston, was born in 1951, but that didn't slow them down.
They were soon in the guided fishing and hunting business, adding to their own log cabin (Tanada Lake Lodge) and expanded into guiding for mountain goats near Katalla, brown bears on the Alaska Peninsula, and polar bears in the Arctic. Many of their fishing and hunting clients came back more than once.
In the 1960s, they developed a 160-acre homestead on Cobb Lakes, near 57 Mile Tok Cutoff. They named it Eagle Trail Ranch because a portion of the old telegraph line/trail from Valdez to Eagle crossed their property. They both loved horses and soon had 20-plus to use in a new guiding area they called Wolf Lake, on the north side of the Nutzotin Mountains.
Bud passed away suddenly in February 1985, and LeNora spent the winters of the next decade traveling, visiting and writing five books about her life. In 1995, she sold Eagle Trail Ranch and moved to North Pole. At age 99, she decided to move to the Pioneers Home, where she resided until her passing.
She will be missed by all. Many thanks to the staff of the Fairbanks Pioneer Home for the wonderful care she received. It was truly her home.
LeNora was predeceased by two sons, Glen and Dick.
She is survived by her sister, Betty Richmond, of Napa Calif.; daughter, Fay Smith, of Spanaway, Wash.; son, Colin Conkle, of North Pole, and many grand, great, and great-great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made, in her name, to Santa's Senior Center, 101 E. Fifth Ave, North Pole, AK 99705.
Cards and labeled photographs received will be displayed at a celebration of life planned for summer. Please email [email protected] or write Corri Conkle, P.O. Box 58400, Fairbanks, AK 99711, for more information.

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Conkle at the Pioneer home, when I worked as a CNA. she was amazing and impacted my life from the moment I met her. I still think of her often and the amazing legacy she left behind. Rest easy Ms. Conkle and Fly with the angels.

As newlyweds, my husband and I were privileged to meet Mrs. Conkle during a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska in 1994. We have since talked about her and other pioneers we met that trip - truly amazing people. Such a sweet lady and her trophy room was definitely something to see - so glad to have her book Wind on the Water. We'll never forget that trip because of the people and places we visited. What a lovely person - wish her family the best - she truly was a special lady.

LeNora stayed with us in Anchorage during some winters. I loved her quick wit and smile and LeNora always loved her boys who would stay with her during hunting seasons. She was gracious and welcoming to everyone.

I feel privileged to have known LeNora. I met her at Senior Citizens in North Pole. She invited me to her home once. I was surprised to see the simple life she led. I am so proud I have one of her books she signed. She will be sorely missed. Truly a pioneer woman

My family visited Lenora many times at Eagle Trail Ranch in the 80's and 90's. She was always ready with a funny story about earlier times on Cobb and Tanada Lakes. She would invite us to pick a bunch of sweet peas she grew by the greenhouse or to come in and look at a crazy quilt design. I admired Lenora for her friendliness, her sense of humor in the face of adversity, and her dedication to writing down the many stories she had gathered during her life. Thanks for the memories, Lenora.

I spent an amazing and interesting Saturday afternoon with Lenora a number of years ago before she sold the Ranch [our first meeting]. She impressed me so with her sense of humor, personal strength, and SHARP mind. I am glad she wrote her books, so some great history has been recorded. I only wish I had met her earlier. I send my condolences to her family.

LeNora, friend of the Cleo and Daphne McMahan family since late 40s. Over the decades LeNora and i stayed in touch, always there for each other when loved ones died. I had great admiration for her and was so thankful she had a good long, may i repeat long... life.
