Fairbanksan Mary Mathis, 75, who was born Sept. 1, 1936, died Monday, July 23, 2012, in her home state of Kansas.|
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane A. Mathis Sr. (Oct. 15, 1938 to July 23, 2003).
She is survived by her six siblings of the Cisneros family, of Kanopolis, Kan.; her children, Gwendolyn Stegner-Stout, Albina and Greg Garman, Duane Jr, Damien, David and Patricia, Daniel, Dominic and Lori, and Demetrius Mathis; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She shall forever be remembered for her community service work, volunteering for multiple organizations including Boy Scouts of America, Midnight Sun Council, Catholic Community programs, Bishop's Attic, Fairbanks Counseling and Adoption, Monroe and ICS HIPOW fundraisers where she was the "Coffee Woman" for more than three decades, and Ladd Elementary Special Education programs.
She also was involved in the Fairbanks Latino Community, helping Latin speaking children comprehend the English language and helping with school work.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in North Pole. Afterward there will be a potluck dinner downstairs. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.
And finally to the Fairbanks community as a whole - Mary's family wishes to express their thanks to you - for you were all her children under the guiding hand of God.
