Mike Lawless Obituary

Melvin "Mike" Lawless, 59, passed away March 2, 2011, at his home in Two Rivers.
Mike was born in St. Maries, Idaho, June 13, 1951, to Jean and John Lawless. He attended school in St. Maries and Kamiah, Idaho and graduated from Kamiah High School.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and ultimately settled in his beloved Alaska that he loved so much.
He left behind eight devastated children who were the light of his life. Mike was a devoted father who absolutely adored his kids. You could see his eyes light up every time he spoke of any of them and he always found pride in all of their accomplishments, no matter how small. He considered his children his legacy and was thrilled each time a new grandchild was born. He loved all of his children and grandchildren and would have done anything in this world for any of them.
Mike was a well known musher who ran the Iditarod in 1986 and again in 1987. He carried on the trail with him a copy of the Bill of Rights, something which he firmly believed in and advocated. When asked what position he placed in the Iditarod, Mike's response was always, "I finished." It was an accomplishment that made him incredibly proud.
He won many dog mushing events and always found much joy and peace with the wind in his face alone on the trail with his dog team. Mike never met anyone he didn't leave an impression on. He was one of those unforgettable characters who were unlike anyone else, with his charisma, intelligence, quick wit and unmistakable crooked smile.
Mike will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, loyal and generous friend who was always willing to lend a hand. He was a man of his word and close friends have said "they broke the mold after Mike." He was strong both in body and mind and never allowed any hurdles to keep him from his objectives. He was a conversationalist who loved to "chew the fat" and would talk for hours on end with friends and family about everything from politics to baseball to astronomy to Tolstoy. Mike was intelligent and well read and fed his mind with knowledge of all kinds. There was hardly a topic you could discuss that Mike didn't know something, if not everything, about.
Mike was a true patriot with a passion for the preservation of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution for the country he was proud to call his home. He was highly respected by those who knew him and will be mourned by many.
He is survived by his devoted children, Ira, Tiffany, Melissa, Jackson, Nathan, Bernadette, Jeanne and Antonia; many precious grandchildren; and his loyal dog, Kobuk, who was with him until the end.
He was preceded in death by his parents whom he dearly loved.
Arrangements for a celebration of life are pending.

To Mike’s family, I know that Mike left you with many wonderful, joyous memories to wrap yourselves in to help lighten your sorrows when times feel unbearable. My heart goes out to you all because Mike was the type of person many gladly opened their life's welcome door to and, by doing so, were left truly blessed from Mike's sharing of his own love with each of us. He was my first love at Kamiah High, he was my fellow athlete in training, we shared ideas, thoughts, and caring. I can see to this very day his crooked smile and his missing half-front tooth, his particular stance that was most endearing. I am thrilled to be counted amongst those who has known him and take comfort that he is in God's care now. I hope this will bring great comfort to you all as well.

Farewell to you Michael, dear, dear friend. The joy you shared will forever remain in my heart.

Warm Thoughts to All.

Ira if words could hold you and hug you then I hope your feeling my arms around you right now. I would cry with you and then we can remember so many years ago when you were just little boy and I would babysit you, and what a good Daddy he was. Sending you love from Idaho.

Mike worked for the A-Team of Alaska General Contractors at least 4 different times between 1994-2oo2. He could fill any position on the crew and fill it well. Mike quickly became a favorite in the company and around the campfire on out of town jobs with His stories and humor . My own children adored Mike as He taught them what he knew about equipment operating, truck driving, grade checking, and just plain living life to it' fullest. Mike will be missed by
very much by all of us but His memory will live on forever in our Hearts. Happy Trails Mike, Your Friends Steve, Heather, Samuel, Joshua,Tara Grace, and Rachel Guildner, North Pole, Alaska

I remember Mike from Kamiah but also our paths crossed when he moved up here to Anchorage, AK many years ago. He was so excited about becoming a musher. My husband also came in touch with him while dip netting in Chitina, Mike was there fishing and living in a tepee. Awhile back Mike gave us a call when he was in town but we didn't get together, wish we would of...Our thoughts and prayers our with his family.

My path crossed Mike's not long ago. Though the Fred Meyer parking lot at 10 below is not the best place to catch up, Mike was eager to reconnect. He wanted me to know he was pleased about a personal achievement in my life. As always, Mike was straight up; when he came across something good, he praised it. No agenda, no need to second guess him. Mike's commitments and convictions were never worn lightly; he knew who he was.

Semper fi, Mike.

I knew Mike in high school and the only regret I have is not knowing him better. He was a very interesting person even then and He definitely left a positive impression on me. I guess I do have another regret, not seeing him again. I hope your sorrow passes quickly.

To all the children & grandchildren reading this - please know that I respected your Dad too and am so very sorry. I will never forget the first time I ever met Mike: It was 1986 he picked me up from the Anchorage Airport when I was on my way to visit their home. There I sat young and quiet, while he talked and talked all the way back to Montana Creek. I too, will greatly miss him. He always made me and my own family feel so special and had a place in his heart for my two kids. Again, I am so sorry. Please, if you (we) can - try to keep his goodneess alive & strong.

With much love, light & respect for his Children, Grandchildren, Relatives and Friends,

God be with you.

RIP Mike...
