Melvin Nelson Obituary
Melvin Nelson, also known as "Mel," left this world Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, in his home surrounded by his family and those who loved him. Mel had been battling OCPD for many years, He now rests with the angels.
Mel was born in Glasgow, Mont., Oct. 15, 1949. He grew up as a small farm boy, loving motorcycles and rebuilding cars. He was raised with three brothers and four sisters. He loved life was always friendly and loved to tell stories. 
In 1975, Mel met the love of his life, Ellen Clark. They married in Reno, Nev., bringing together two families as one, his two young daughters and her two children. In 1976, a year later, they gave birth to their first child together, completing the family.
Mel and Ellen packed up their family and moved from Soap Lake, Wash., to Fairbanks in 1980. Mel worked for tire shops and mechanic shops, moving on to Prudhoe Bay. Leaving that, he finally becoming an ASE Certified Mechanic and retired from Fairbanks Alignment. Mel always classified himself as a "Jack of all trades and a master of none."
Mel loved fishing with his family. He also loved hunting, being in the outdoors, riding his ATV or just tinkering in his garage. There wasn't anything he wouldn't try, and learn as he did it.
He would go out of his way to help strangers. He met many people through the course of his life. He had a warm sense of humor and a smile on his face. If you had a problem, you always knew that he was only a phone call away. He would open his home and his heart.
 Mel is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ellen Nelson of North Pole; children, Christy and Brian Heidt of Billings, Mont., Kelly and Shannon Braiser of Pennsylvania, Jesse and Mia Sanchez of Barrow, Linda Schaffers of Florida, Della Evans of North Pole, and Paul Evans of Palmer.
He also leaves 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Cliffard Nelson, Karen Nelson, Margret Miller, Sharon Elvasky, Donna McBride and Leonard and Trudy Nelson.
Mel is now embraced within the arms of loved ones who wait for us all: parents, John and Louise Nelson, and James and Della Mae Hansen; his granddaughter, Deirdra Ellen Brown, and great-grandson, Aden Suvlu, and his nephew, Jimmy Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made at Wells Fargo, in his name, Melvin E. Nelson. 
A small celebration of life potluck will be held at his home for family and friends. Those arrangements are still being made. Please feel free to contact the family for date and time, if you wish to attend.
