Richard Alexander Miles departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at his home in Fairbanks.
Richard Alexander Miles was born Feb. 10, 1934, in Petersburg, Va.
Richard was the youngest son of the late Viola and Tom Miles. He was also the youngest brother to the late Tom, John, Bill Miles, and Constance Hall.
Richard completed his early and secondary education in Petersburg, Va., graduating from Peabody High School in June 1952. After graduation, he attended Oberlin College. He later decided to join the Army. After serving his time in the Army, he joined his brothers, Tom, John and Bill Miles in Fairbanks. He lived with his brother, John, and family for a short while.
Richard lived and worked for many years in Clear. He would come to Fairbanks to visit his home and brothers' families on the weekends. When the pipeline came to Alaska, Richard went to work on it in Point Barrow. He worked there for some years before retiring. He was always happy to report that he had been retired for well more than 30 years.
Throughout the years, Richard enjoyed traveling to many countries. He would often take his mother, Viola Miles, with him on his travels. His dad did not like to travel by plane so he stayed home. He had many souvenirs to show where he traveled as well as pictures and post cards.
He leaves to cherish his memory: loving nieces and nephews, Karen (Walter) George of Prince George,Va., Steven (Melinda) Miles of Petersburg, Va., Constance Miles of Calif., Keith (Minnie) Miles of Florida, Belinda Miles of Colonial Heights, Va., Sandra Robinson of Matoaca, Va., and Jennifer Miles of Chesterfield, Va., and other great nieces and nephews; a favorite sister-in-law, Ruby Miles of Petersburg, Va., and Nell McFarlane Miles of N.Y., and a numerous devoted friends.
A funeral service for Richard A. Miles was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry St. Petersburg, Va. The Rev. Dr. George W. C. Lyons, pastor, gave the eulogy. The interment followed at Eastview Cemetery.
