Tony E. Arthur, 77, of Suffolk, Mont., died of natural causes Thursday evening, April 25, 2013, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center.|
He was born March 8, 1936, in Lewistown, Mont., the son of Hedley J. and Elizabeth "Tiny" (LaFountain) Arthur.
They lived on the Glen place, east of Suffolk, until 1939, then moved to the George Evens place, west of Suffolk. They later moved east of Winifred to the Charlie Eivord place.
Tony attended country elementary schools and graduated from Winifred High School in 1955. In 1956, he entered the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and was honorably discharged in October 1958. After that, he worked on the Minuteman missile sites in central Montana.
On Jan. 2, 1963, Tony was united in marriage to Ella Berg. He then worked highway construction in Southwest Montana and in 1967, they purchased a ranch near Sheridan, Mont. They operated the ranch until moving to Alaska in fall 1973, where he worked on the North Slope haul road and the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
In 1976, Ella and the kids moved back to Montana. Tony continued to live in Alaska and work road construction. In 1988, he built a homestead 145 miles north of Fairbanks. He entered the trucking business in Fairbanks, hauling freight, operating belly-dumps and heavy equipment until his retirement in 2004. He then returned to Montana making his home at Suffolk where he purchased the home of his parents from his brother Jim.
Tony was an old time rodeo cowboy and range cowboy and enjoyed horses and wagons, so he began breaking horses and rebuilding wagons, which led to an old timer's museum in Suffolk. Tony was a member of the American Legion of Winifred.
He is survived by one son, Billy Joe, of Bozeman, Mont.; two daughters, Sandy (Tom) Kinsman, of Bellingham, Wash., and Nancy (Wayne) Rasmussen, of Union Grove, Wis.; brothers, Larry (Shirley Benes) and Jim, of Winifred, Mont., Don (Elva) and Sid (Penny), of Belgrade, Mont.; sisters, Patsy (Bob) Simac, of Winifred, Mont., and Beatrice (Tony) Lunda, of Shelby, Mont.; four grandchildren, Amber and Emily Rasmussen, and T.J. and Alex Kinsman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for Tony Arthur were held May 1, 2013, in the Winifred Community Center, followed by interment in the Winifred Cemetery.
