Anne Martha Powers, 93, a longtime Fairbanks resident passed away at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with family at her side March 9, 2014. She was born March 23, 1920, in Rock Island, Ill., to Hans and Martha Staecker.
The Guest Book is expired.
Anne grew up in the Chicago area and first worked for the Rock Island Railroad during World War II. She transferred to the railroad's office in California where she met Kenneth Powers, a Marine on leave, who would soon become her husband.
Ken and Anne married in 1945. Their first son, James, was born in 1947 followed by Gary in 1949. Shortly after the birth of Gary, the family packed up and traveled the Alcan Highway to Fairbanks to start their Alaska adventures. Another son, Jon, was born to them in 1954, and then in 1959, their only daughter, Kathy, joined the family.
Besides raising her family, Anne worked at the University of Alaska for 22 years in the comptroller's office. Anne loved her children and their families. Her home resembled Grand Central Station with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren popping in to visit or offer a helping hand. Her refrain was, "I welcome all interruptions." She maintained an adventurous spirit all throughout life that included 64 years in Alaska with several trips along the Alcan Highway.
Anne will be remembered for her loving kindness, unfailing encouragement when needed and consistently going the extra mile for her family. She also will be remembered for her acute memory and quick sense of humor, as well as her tremendous love for chocolate.
Up until she went to sleep for the last time, she remained engaged and interested in the lives of all her family, which consists of Jim and Ruby Powers and their children, Kevin and Lynn Powers, and their children, Ethan, Bethany and Lauren; Michael Powers; Lori and Clint Campbell, and their children, Cameron and Caitlin; Jessica Powers; Gary and Diana Powers, and their children, Shane Powers, and his wife, Kyndall; Jaime and Dustin Witte and their children, Kaydence and Ashlyn; David Powers; Jon and Suzanne Powers and their children, Ashley and Jennifer; Kathy and Milo Crawford and their daughter, Anne Marie, and her husband, Bob Revermann, and their daughter, Karah.
Next year was always going to be her winning year for the Nenana Ice Classic. Recently, she missed by just a few minutes. This year, the ice will go out without her.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, and by one grandson, Jeff Borchert.
A memorial service will be held this summer at Northern Lights Memorial Park.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
