Isheal Martin, Sr., 77, passed into eternal rest peacefully, with loved ones by his side June 28, 2014, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Martin was born Aug. 23, 1936, at Shreveport Charity Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Arthur Martin and Luveres Besaint. Growing up, he spent his summers in Natchitoches, Louisiana, picking cotton. When school was in session he would return to his parents in Shreveport where he completed high school.
On Oct. 25, 1954, Martin joined the U.S. Army and spent three years and a day in the military. He spent one year, 11 months and 11 days overseas in Germany. He was honorably released from active duty on Oct. 25, 1957.
In 1957, Martin married Leslie B. Aaron and moved to Oakland, California. That same year, he attended Barber College and moved his family to San Francisco in 1958. Martin accepted Christ into his life in 1958 when he joined Saint Buela COGIC in San Francisco. He worked as a cook and a barber. In 1960, Martin began working at the naval shipyard in San Francisco. Four children were born to Martin and Leslie B.'s union.
On April 4, 1970, Martin landed in Fairbanks. He had numerous jobs, working at Alaskaland, now Pioneer Park, the University of Alaska Fairbanks and cab driving. That same year, he joined Teamsters Local 959 and became a truck driver. From 1982 to 1992, Martin worked as a truck driver, transporting pipe for the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. From 1992 until he retired in 2000, he worked at Clear Air Force Station. He was a bus driver and parts delivery driver while employed in Clear.
While working up north, he met and married Christine L. Bruton and adopted her two boys. After their separation, he had one more child at age 52. Then he married Alma Jean Kimble on Feb. 25, 1989 in Shreveport.
Martin was a worker. Even after he retired he had what he called, "a soda water job." He worked at KFC and McDonald's until 2008. Afterward, he enjoyed being a grandpa and spent his time at home doing odd things around the house. He spent a lot of quiet time to himself, reading his Bible and rolling cigarettes.
He was the last to enter this earth and the last to leave. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Martin and Luveres Martin; siblings, LM Martin, Luverse Martin Jackson and AJ Martin; grandchildren, Larry Nalls Jr. and Carley McFarland, Sr.
He is survived by his children, Isheal Martin Jr., Sandra J. Martin, of San Francisco; Codie V. Martin, of Stockton, California;  Priscilla A. (Martin) Nalls, of Oakland, California; Martiese Martin, of Fairbanks; Charles Stevenson, of Anchorage; Duane Stevenson, of Houston, Texas; and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, financial donations are being accepted for final services.
A viewing will be held from 1-2 p.m. followed by services at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
