Michael L. Mastel Sr. Obituary
Our beloved Michael Lee Mastel Sr., 62, of Fort Yukon, passed away at his home on Dec. 29, 2010.
Michael was a devoted husband to Christie Johnson Mastel. They were married Aug. 20, 1977, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Fort Yukon. Mike made a home for his wife, and together they raised three children. He was a loving grandfather to his six grandchildren,cp and he had a hard time saying no to them. He especially enjoyed watching his eldest grandson, Shawntel Adams, during basketball season.
Michael was born Aug. 11, 1948, in Huron, S.D., to Ethel and Laurence Mastel. He was the eldest of three brothers and two sisters. He graduated from Huron College in 1967 and moved to Alaska in 1975 to teach in Fort Yukon. He said when he got off the airplane, he knew he had found his home. He taught the remainder of his career at Fort Yukon School until he retired in 1998.
After retiring, he earned a commercial driver's license and worked until his death. Always ready to lend a hand, Mike never said no to those in need. He and his wife cared for her father, Elliott Johnson Sr., in his final years and were helping raise several of their grandchildren. Whether it was in his children's lives or those he taught, he gave as much as he could and Fort Yukon is forever grateful to him.
Mike loved the outdoors and lived with the seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmachining, four-wheeling and cutting wood were favorite activities. His great joy, however, was to be at home with his family. It was only fitting that he went straight from home to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior.
His is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Christie Mastel; his daughters, Lucy and Christina; and son, Michael Mastel Jr.; grandchildren, Shawntel Adams, Shane and Blake Carroll, John Davis Jr., and Camry Solomon and Josiah Mastel, his parents, Ethel and Laurence Mastel; and his siblings, Arland, Steven, David, Linda and Lois.
Visitation will be at noon, today, Jan. 4, at the Fort Yukon Gymnasium. A funeral service will follow at
1 p.m. The Rev. Mary Nathaniel will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers are David Bridges, Tony Carroll, Jay Stackhouse, Sammy Solomon, Alfred Peter and Richard Strom Sr. Pallbearers will be Shawntel Adams, Tony Carroll, David Bridges, Shawn Carroll, Sammy Solomon and John Davis Solomon.
Burial will be at the Hudson Stuck Cemetery. A potlatch will follow at the Tribal Hall.
The family would like to thank all who have helped them in their time of need.
