William was born Feb. 26, 1940, in Skipperville, Ala. He was the second oldest with seven sisters, born to Ester Mae and Shellie McCleod.
He attended D.A. Smith High School. At age 21, Bill and his cousin hopped on a train to New York where they lived for about 10 years.

Bill continued to be a truck driver and received a call from his sister, Hendrietta, in Alaska, who was married to a Fort Wainwright soldier. In January 1976, Bill came to Alaska, where he met Kathy "Kat" Avery and her son, Fela, and he later married "Kat." Bill, and stepson, Fela, worked together for moving companies.
Bill enjoyed fishing, movies, and outdoor wilderness pictures. Bill also enjoyed watching basketball and football with his brother-in-law, Jerry Snelling. He always had a smile and a joke and something positive to say.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Kathy "Kat" McCleod; his son, Walter McCleod; his daughter, Angelina (Arnold) Suvatne, and their two children, Joshua and Justin Suvatne; step-grandson, Keannan Avery, and great-granddaughter, Diamond Avery.
