On Aug. 2, 2013, Raymond Eugene Clark passed away from a hard fought battle with cancer. Ray "Papa" Clark was born Sept. 1, 1948, to Clifford and Mae Clark, of Black Butte, Ore.|
In 1956, Ray moved to Eugene, Ore. He graduated from North Eugene High School in 1966, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. In 1967, he volunteered to go to Vietnam with the 2nd Battalion, First Marines, Easy Company and was awarded two purple hearts.
In 1969, he returned home and reunited with a beautiful woman from high school, Linda Saelens. In 1970, they were married. That same year he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service.
In 1973 their son, Sean, was born, and three years later, their daughter, Sarah, was born. During this time Ray not only worked, but also attended college and was a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He also attended OCS and was commissioned an officer.
In 1978, he and Linda moved to Portland, Ore., where he was promoted in the USPS The year 1984 brought another promotion and another move, to San Francisco, Calif. Four years later, in 1988, he received another promotion and the family moved to Denver, Colo. Eight years later, and tired of big city life, Ray and Linda moved to Fairbanks with another promotion to Postmaster of Fairbanks.
Ray retired Jan. 2, 2004, to spend time with his granddaughters, Savannah, Lindsay and Cheyenne. They were the love of his life.
Ray also volunteered at St. Nicholas Church, the food bank and Love, Inc., to name a few.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Clark; his mother, Mae (Holley) Clark; and son, Sean Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Saelens) Clark; daughter, Sarah (Clark) Moisan; granddaughters, Savannah Moisan, Lindsay Mae Moisan and Cheyenne Swart-Moisan, all from North Pole; his sister, Donna Clark, of Eugene; nieces, Dee Dee Pigeon, of Eugene; Michelle Jackson, of Springfield, Ore.; and Denise Jackson, of New York; nephew, Robert Clark of Salem, Ore.; brother-in-law, Mark Saelens and wife, Claire Saelens, and their children, Ben and Timothy of Newport, Ore.
A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at St. Nicholas Church in North Pole.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug., 17, 2013, at St. Nicholas Church, with a reception to follow the service. Burial will be after the reception, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Northern Lights Memorial Park in Fairbanks.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to a memorial account at Alaska USA, under the name of Linda M. Clark.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
