Jerry Parsons, 73, of Fairbanks, died Aug. 16, 2013, at his residence while surrounded by his loving family.
Jerry was born April 16, 1940, to Ciegle and Francis Parsons. He was raised in North Wilkesboro, N.C., and was the oldest of four siblings.
On his 17th birthday he decided to join the U.S. Air Force. He was soon stationed overseas in Germany and enjoyed the European life. When he returned to the states he was stationed in Hyannis, Mass. That is where he met Helen. He knew he had found "the one" and on March 30, 1963, they were married. Together they started their family and had four children:three boys and one girl.
In 1965, Jerry was sent to Vietnam for a 13-month tour in combat; thankfully he came home unharmed. Jerry, his wife, and children lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1971, Jerry received orders to come to Alaska and was stationed at Eielson Air Force Base, but they called North Pole "home." In 1977, after 20 years of service, Jerry retired as a technical seargent (TSgt).
After retiring, he put his skills into becoming an auto mechanic in the Fairbanks area.  Outside of work, he enjoyed teaching his sons to fix and rebuild cars for fun.
In 2005, Jerry fully retired after suffering a heart attack. He began his retirement by taking his wife on one last trip across the seas and they vacationed in Thailand, soaking up all the warm weather they could before coming back to Alaska. He lived out his days being a happy grandpa or "Pop Pop," as the lil' ones called him.
Jerry was also an avid gunsman who loved to collect, repair and shoot any gun you would put in his hands-antique, slightly used or brand new. He was a proud NRA member and loved to trap shoot at the Fairbanks Trap Club. He competed in and won more than 300 local and statewide shooting completions, earning several mentions in national gun magazines.
Above all else, Jerry most enjoyed his role as a grandpa. In 1990, after his daughter's death, Jerry and Helen took on the ultimate role of raising their oldest granddaughter as their own.
We will be forever grateful for his guidance through life. He will be missed by all who knew him, but most by his wife. They were lucky enough to have found each other and will be lost until they are joined again in Heaven.
Jerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frelin and Carrie Parsons; father, Ciegle Parsons; sister, Carolyn Wiles; sister-in-law, Glenda Parsons; and daughter, Juanita Parsons.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Parsons; sons, Donald (Marcy) Parsons, Jerry (Tresa) Parsons, David (April) Parsons; grandchildren, Jennifer, Torrance, Amanda, Tyler, Trevor aka Boo-Boo, and Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Michael, Avery, and Karah; mother, Francis Parson; sister, JoAnn (Wayne) Church; brothers, Jimmy Parsons, Larry (Helen) Parson; and several nieces and nephews. Jerry is also survived in memory by all who knew and loved him.
At his request, he will be cremated and there will be no funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to help with his final expenses and donations may be made at Alaska USA, account number 1790489.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fairbanks Funeral Home.
