Robert Miller Obituary

Robert G. "Bobby" Miller passed away peacefully at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on Feb. 14, 2014. He was 96. Bobby was born in Fairbanks in 1917, one of nine children of pioneer immigrants from Slovenia, Frank and Mary Miller.
After graduation from High school, Bobby went to work in the mines at Flat for the Miscoviches, and after a summer there, vowed he would never use a pick and shovel again. In the early years, Bobby worked with his brother, Max, and AI Ghezzi in the transportation business. When World War II began, Bobby joined the U.S. Army, spending two and a half years at Cold Bay in the Aleutians.
After the war, Bobby started buying military surplus aircraft and equipment. His company, Miller & Bentley Equipment, operated out of the old Bentley Brothers' Dairy, across College Road from what is now the Bentley Mall. Many Fairbanksans remember Bobby and close friend, Joe Vogler, in Bobby's office animatedly discussing their dislike of the federal government, judges and lawyers.
Bobby, very early on, recognized the importance of aviation in Alaska and in 1944 learned to fly with Cliff Everts as his flight instructor. He was a founding member and chairman of the board of directors of Northern Consolidated Airlines. In 1968, NCA and Wien Airlines merged, forming Wien Consolidated Airlines. In 1973, Bobby retired from management of the company, but remained active on its board of directors. The Alaska Aviation Museum recognized Bobby as one of Alaska's Aviation Legends in 2013.
During the '70s, Bobby operated a dragline gold mine in Manley Hot Springs. His business partner in Man Mining Co. was Jack Neubauer. To help miners sell their gold, he formed Alaska Gold Sales. In 1977 he held a weeklong auction at Alaskaland, selling 10,000 ounces of gold.
In 1980, Bobby purchased Arctic Circle Hot Springs as a way to cater to local Alaskans. He married Laverna in 1990, and together they enjoyed operating the springs until it closed in October 2002.
Bobby was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary, Albina, Josephine, Polly, Billy, Max, Hank and Emma. He is survived by his wife, Laverna; step-daughter, Karen Lavery; nieces and nephews, Andy Warwick, Randy Warwick, Miriam Warwick, Bob Burglin, Stacy Miller, Scott Miller, Blair Miller, Hank Miller, Richard Miller, William Witcher and Geri Miller Koerner.
Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. April 5 at Friends Church, located at 1485 30th Ave., in Fairbanks, and there will be a celebration of Bobby's life immediately afterward. Remembrances may be sent to: Laverna Miller, 95 Farewell Ave., No. 3, Fairbanks, AK 99701.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 71396, Fairbanks, AK 99707; Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 4, P.O. Box 70050, Fairbanks, AK 99707; or KJNP Radio Station, P.O. Box 56359, North Pole, AK 99705.

Just only that he had a golden heart ❤! I remember when I was going to Lathrop High School and he said he needed me full time! $12 an hour! Thats big money back in 1974! Plus, any car or truck I wanted to drive! At 16, that was all the money in the world!!! Buy low, sell high!!! Ill never forget how great he was to me and my brother!!! God bless your soul and keep the coffee on for me when I get to Heaven!!! I was honored to know Mr. Miller!!! A true pioneer of pioneers!!! Respectfully, in Christ. Larry Frey.

I don't think that i ever met anyone quite like Bobby. He was very direct and to the point. Bob, called them as he seen them, and looking back he was point on. Sure he would get all worked up over things that might seem trivial but that and his smile and mannerism made him who he was. Rest in peace Bob, I am glad to have met you.
Scott.

My GREAT Uncle Bob. I am blessed to be born into this Family. my name was Beverly for 3 days until Uncle Bob put in his 2 cents and my mom changed my name to Rebecca, Thank you Uncle Bob.
He was like a Dad to me giving me advice and lots of love. Sometimes he would come home to find me on his couch, no invitation or announcement. He would welcome me and first of all ask if I wanted something to eat. He would then say, " All you really need is a little boiled potato." I would agree but then say how we deserved better because we work so hard and we would go out to eat. A great memory was lunch with Bob and La Verna at the Japanese Restaurant near their home. First time for Sushi, he was proud of his use of Chop Stix he had earned early in his life. I still have a photo of that day of the clothes hanging on the power lines on the roof of the Restaurant, only in Fairbanks. I learned a lot from him and am very proud to call him Family. I love you Bob and LaVerna.

Back in the day when my letters to the News-Miner editors appeared with greater frequency, I remember getting phone calls from Bobby Miller. He was enthusiastic about my writing, usually when it exposed pompous windbags looking to tell others how to live. That's how we got acquainted. In the mix, I gained an appreciation for his perspective of Alaska and am sad to see him go. An amazing life.

A great interior Alaska legend has passed. I can't recall how many times Bobby showed up at my Dad's poker games, how many long conversations I had with him on the street corner or how many times his adamant opinions rang true. I will miss him.

What a long ride Bobby had. I always gave him the time of day (sometimes for an hour) and the seeing sparkle in his eyes was my pleasure. I first met him back in 1961 at his salvage yard on collage rd. R.I.P. Bobby. "Rancher"
