Joel Wayne Council

Raleigh

Joel Wayne Council, the eldest son of the late Hal and Isabelle Murray Council, passed away on April 6, 2016 at Tower Nursing Home in Raleigh, NC.

Joel was born January 9, 1935, and graduated from Garner High School in 1953. Two years later, he joined the US Air Force, studied Russian at Army Language School in Monterey, CA and finished first in his class, with a Top Secret Clearance. He saw duty in Japan and National Security Agency.

After an honorable discharge, he earned a degree at UNC Chapel Hill and taught Spanish at Garner High School. Later he received a Master Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University allowing him to work in several states employed as a social worker.

Joel is survived by his son, Jody Charles Lannis Council; grandsons, Voltaire and Caulder; daughter, Kimberly Kirsten Burr and husband Eugene; granddaughter, Athena; brothers, Noel Council and wife Ruth and Neal Council and wife Rachel; uncle, Bobby Murray and wife Wanda; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gratitude is express to Tower Nursing Home and Staff for their loving care and to Heartland Hospice Care.

A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 PM, Friday, April 15, 2016 at Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

Joel was my Spanish teacher in High School and I have never forgotten his gentle nature and interest in individual pupils that went far beyond the classroom. He was a great support at a crucial moment in my youth. I have always been grateful for his kindness.
