William Lamont Abbott, (Lt. Col., USA-Ret'd.), 93, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Abbott was born the eldest son of Arthur W. and Helen Abbott, on December 31, 1915, in Lisle Township, DuPage County, Illinois. He received a B.A. degree from North Central College, and D.V.M. from Ohio State University. He retired from the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps in November of 1961, following continuous service of 21 years, including World War II and Korea. He also performed various duty assignments stateside, overseas in Alaska, the Far East and Europe. Following retirement from the U.S. Army, he was employed for 5 years with North Carolina Department of Agriculture, as Assistant State Supervisor in the state meat and poultry inspection program.
In 1967, Mr. Abbott moved to Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, as Assistant Administrator of the Meat Inspection Division, which at that time was establishing a new state meat inspection program, and continued in that position, until retirement in March 1981. He was a life member of The Retired Officers Association, which became Military Officers Association of America (MOOA) on January 1, 2003; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Disabled American Veterans; BPOE Elks; and Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association; Madison Firing Squad and Rowan County Honor Guard. Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by his wife, Grace P. Abbott, who died February 8, 2002.
Survivors include his daughter, Katherine G. Jones of Salisbury; Dorothy Glasgow, and Linda G. Dupree, both of Raleigh, Helen A. Rife of Tallahassee, FL; and sister, Ruthanne A. Baird of Elmhurst, IL.
Graveside service 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2009 at Salisbury National Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Ft. Bragg Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, Alzheimers Unit, 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.

It was an honor to have served with
him as a member of the Rowan County Military Honor Guard.. He had a passion to serve other veterans...as we did in 100 degrees
or snow.. didnt matter to him he was always there to honor others..
