Kindy, Walter Lee (Walt) - Chapel Hill  
Walter (Walt) Lee Kindy December 16, 1935 - April 17, 2015 Chapel Hill Walt Kindy died on Friday, April 17 at UNC Hospital after a short illness. He was 79. The only child of Warren and Geneva (nee Hawker) Kindy of Troy Ohio, he was a retired sales representative and sports enthusiast. He attended Troy High School and Wittenberg University in Springfield Ohio, where he studied Mathematics and PE, played basketball, was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and he and his bulldog Disha were campus fixtures. He met Jean (Miller) his wife of 43 years when he attended graduate school at Ohio University in Athens Ohio. Walt taught briefly at Vandalia High school before joining NCR in Dayton Ohio, where he worked until moving to Chapel Hill in 1988. After retiring in 1990, he devoted himself to his passions - his family and sports. Walt made many friends and touched innumerable lives. An avid golfer he played with the Senior Men's Golf Association at the Chapel Hill Country Club.. An avid sports fan he was a member of the Rams club for over 20 years. As a coach he assisted with youth basketball, and as a mentor he volunteered his time to the Blue Ribbon mentor-advocate program of Chapel Hill / Carrboro school district. He was preceded in death by Jean in 2001. He is survived by his three daughters, Robin Little (Lago Vista, TX), Amy Wells (Seattle, WA), and Mindy Sigmon (Atlanta, GA), and 8 grandchildren - Danny Little, Jamie Little (Wangler), Lindsay Wells, Abigail Sigmon, Malea Wells, Ben Sigmon, Hannah Sigmon and Drew Sigmon. Donations in his honor may be made to the UNC Educational Foundation Scholarship Program, where Walt and Jean endowed a volleyball scholarship - 919-843-2000, or PO Box 2446 Chapel Hill NC 27515.

King, J. Edward - Durham  
J. Edward King August 23, 1931 - March 16, 2015 Durham J. (Joseph) Edward King, 83, a lifelong resident of Durham, died at Hillcrest Convalescent Center on Monday, March 16, 2015. Ed King was born in Durham on August 23, 1931 to the late Jettie Alonzer King and Esker Elizabeth King (Crutchfield), both also of Durham. Ed grew up in Durham (DHS '49) and attended Duke University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry (Trinity '54) and a master's degree in anatomy (Graduate School '56), after which he began what became a forty-two year career at Duke University. During this time, he worked as a research scientist in the Department of Anatomy (research included canine olfactory neuroanatomy and the effects of prenatal nicotine exposure on birth weight); as the Manager of the Central Teaching Facilities for the Medical School (during which time he traveled to Guatemala to help establish new medical school teaching facilities there); and also as a radiation safety officer. After retiring from Duke, he was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and often volunteered at West Point on the Eno, not far from where his grandfather, W.E. King, served as the chief engineer of the Durham Water Company's Eno River Pumping Station. Ed's many interests included photography, classical music, fishing, and basketball (especially Duke basketball). In addition to his sister, Elizabeth Ann of Winston-Salem, NC, he is survived by his four sons and their families – Bill of Concord, NC, along with wife Rheba, and Bill's children Ian and Meagan; Julian of Garner, NC, along with wife Aimee and their children Rose, Drew, and Wade; John of Garrett Park, MD, along with wife Liz and their children Cara and David, and David of Durham, NC, along with wife Cindy and their children Andrew, Bradley, Evan, and Rebecca. The family welcomes friends to visit, from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, April 16th at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham. A private burial will occur in the Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC. Online condolences may be made at www.hall wynne.com . Kauffmann, John A. - Raleigh  
John Anthony Kauffmann Raleigh John A. "Jack" Kauffmann, 84, of Raleigh passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13th. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jane Ann Kauffmann. Jack was born on July 31, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA. and graduated from Roman Catholic High School. He graduated from Villanova with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering where he was also a member of the Vespers Rowing Club. Following graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After two years of service, he began a 37-year career with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY and retired at IBM Research Triangle Park. Jack was a devoted member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for 50 years. Surviving are his six children, John A Kauffmann Jr. and wife Rebecca of Southport, NC, Virginia K. Royal and husband Robert, Christine K. Belo and husband Louis, Mark A. Kauffmann and wife Rosemary, Paul A. Kauffmann and wife Tammie, Elizabeth K. Brown and husband Mark, all of Raleigh, NC. He is survived by his sister, Sister Virginia Marie Kauffmann of Philadelphia, PA, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Robert, and Julius Kauffmann. Jack is survived by 12 grandchildren; Leigh Lewis, Elizabeth Ball, Michelle Mulvihill, Sara Jane Kauffmann, Lauren Lane, Matthew Kauffmann, Maggie Kauffmann, Ashley Royal, Mary Elizabeth Brown, Michael Kauffmann, Christopher Brown, Nora Belo, and six great-grandchildren; Elise, Maizie, Lanie, Parker Jane, Perrin, and Toby. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11am on Friday, April 17 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial will follow the service in the Memorial Garden and Columbarium on the church grounds. A reception will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Parish Center following the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org . The Kauffmann family would like to thank the caregivers of Waltonwood Cary for the exceptional care of Jack during his time there.
