James F. Allen June 7, 1929 - May 15, 2013 Raleigh James Fontaine Allen died on May 15, 2013 after a long period of declining health. James was the only child of Fontaine and Louisa King Allen of Clayton, N.C. He attended Mars Hill College and graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Forestry. After graduation, he worked briefly with U.S. Plywood in Orangeburg, S.C. James served in the United States Army during the Korean War. When he returned from service, he began his long career with Northwestern Insurance Company/ Unigard. He then worked with Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company until his retirement in 1994. In Raleigh, James was a member of Saint Giles Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. James was a long time member of the N.C. State Wolfpack Club. James is survived by his wife, Jane M. Allen and his sons, James F. Allen, Jr and partner Timothy E. Locklear of Wake Forest, N.C.; John L. Allen and wife Shannon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also surviving is a niece, Janet A. Raab and husband Carl Raab with daughter Emily Small of Raleigh, N.C. The family wishes to thank the staff of Mayview Convalescent Center for their kind and thoughtful care during the recent weeks. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 20, 2013 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.  David Franklin Arnn Sr. September 24, 1941 - May 15, 2013 Lake Royale David Franklin Arnn, Sr. died May 15, 2013, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, as a result of injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident while on a Rotary International Rotocyclist Fellowship ride with fellow Rotarians. David Franklin Arnn, Sr., was born September 24, 1941, to Buford Clay Arnn, Sr., and Madie Herndon Arnn, in Danville, Virginia. Preceding him in death were siblings Buford Clay Arnn, Jr., and Tommy Daniel Arnn. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman in Verdun, France. He graduated from Lee College, Cleveland, Tennessee, preparing himself for his early years in the field of Social Work with disadvantaged children. David served as Social Worker at Bachman's Children's Home in Cleveland and later as Campus Life Director of Falcon Children's Home in Falcon, North Carolina. David loved children and especially serving as their advocate. In 1976 he began his work serving the elderly of Golden Years Nursing Home in Falcon, North Carolina, as a licensed Nursing Home Administrator then later in 1983 moved to Johnston County to serve its elderly in need of skilled nursing care. He had a true passion for helping others in need expecting no recognition in return. He served as administrator of Johnston County Memorial Nursing Center and now Smithfield Manor until January of this year at which time his son Nathan, assumed that position. He continued as the president of Smithfield Manor, Inc. David was a fun guy who cared deeply for others, serving as if no one was looking. He was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, world traveler and "spoiler" extraordinaire of his bride, Carol, for 46 years. David has previously served on the Zoning Board of Smithfield and later on the Council on Aging Board for 6 years, his last two as its chairman. Another passion was his love of Rotary. He served as president of both Dunn and Smithfield clubs. 2001-2002, he served as District Governor of District 7710. His life exemplified the year's theme, "Mankind Is My Business". He was a Polio Eradicator supporting Rotary's goal and had traveled to India to administer the Polio vaccine. David loved Boy Scouts and worked both in the Dunn and Smithfield communities with its program. All three sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was awarded the prestigious "Order of the Long Leaf Pine" in recognition of his work serving senior citizens in 2005. Surviving are his wife, Carol, of the home at Lake Royale, David Arnn, Jr., (Robin Hailey) of Clayton, Jonathan Arnn (Betsy) of Hampstead, N.C., and Nathan Arnn (Alison) of Smithfield, four grandchildren, Audrey, Julie, Kane, and Jessica who all affectionately call him "Grandpollie", a sister, Dorothy Benson, and brother, Carroll Arnn, Sr. of Danville, Virginia. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Smithfield. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the David F. Arnn Endowment Scholarship, Johnston Community College, created for the staff's family members of Smithfield Manor or to Rotary International's Polio Eradication Program.

 Irving Samuel Bell, Jr. Raleigh Irving Samuel Bell Jr., 92, of Raleigh went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ May 16, 2013. He was born in Sampson County April 28, 1921 to Irving S. Bell Sr. and Macy Matthews Bell. He served in World War II in the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division from 1943-1947. Irving was one of the original founders of the Raleigh Rescue Mission. He retired from the News and Observer after 40 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Mildred Arnaiz Bell; brother, Dr. Morris L. Bell (Clinton NC); and sister, Macy B. Findley. He is survived by his daughter, Terry Bell Tharrington and husband, Bob of Raleigh; sister, Peggy Bell Reynolds of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Mary B. Bell of Clinton NC; six precious grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews. He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend to so many that he loved to talk to about Jesus and his (Jesus Club). He loved to give out the papers and pens he made about Jesus. Singing, talking about Jesus and praying for others was the joy of his life. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7 Amen. Douglas Kent Bettenhausen Raleigh Douglas Kent Bettenhausen, 50, of Raleigh passed into the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 17th surrounded by his family. Doug suffered for several years from multiple system atrophy, a rare degenerative neurological disease for which there is no cure and no treatment. However, MSA did not define his life. Doug was born in Fayetteville, NC to Letha Grace Bettenhausen and the late Edgar George Bettenhausen. He graduated from Westover Sr High School in Fayetteville. He received a BS in Pharmacy from UNC and a PharmD from Campbell University. Doug was VP of Medical Affairs and Product Safety at Salix Pharmaceuticals until his retirement for medical reasons. He was one of the original staff in the Raleigh location, and upon his retirement a company award was created in his honor. He was a devoted member of Open Door Baptist Church. His favorite saying was "you touch it, you catch it" which he took from his football playing days, but which he applied to everything in his life. He touched so many during his incredible journey. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Herring Bettenhausen, son Jonathan Douglas Bettenhausen and daughter Allison Grace Bettenhausen of the home. His mother Letha Grace Bettenhausen and brother Kevin Scott Bettenhausen, both of Raleigh as well as his devoted canines Spencer and frisbee buddy Casey. Also surviving are mother-in-law Wilma Herring of Warsaw and a large extended family and many loving friends. His greatest joy here on earth were Jonathan and Allie, both of whom he was shamelessly proud. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the employees of Salix Pharmaceuticals for their continued love and support throughout Doug's illness. Louise Sawyer Burgess Elizabeth City Louise Sawyer Burgess, 91, of Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Albemarle Hospital. A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of the late Hersey Gordon Sawyer and Gertrude Perry Sawyer and the widow of Charles Morris Burgess. She graduated from Meredith College and Southeastern Baptist Seminary. She was a retired primary school teacher and member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church. She was involved in a number of church related positions both state and local. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Chaffin of Shiloh, NC; a niece, Mary Anderson and husband David of Raleigh, NC; a nephew John Chaffin and wife Sandy of Shiloh, NC; two great nieces, Lauren and Sarah Anderson; and two great nephews, Matt and Luke Chaffin. A graveside memorial service will be Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Don Carter officiating at West Lawn Cemetery.
