Ambrose, Sue
Sue Elks Ambrose August 25, 1935 - December 14, 2014 Sue Elks Ambrose, 79, of rural Chapel Hill passed away at Hock Pavilion Hospice after long suffering from chronic illnesses. Born in rural Pitt Co, she grew up in the Ballards Crossroads area of Greenville NC, and was the youngest daughter of the late Etta Belle Faulkner Elks and William Henry Elks. In her youth Sue worked on the family farm, attended school and joined Ballards Crossroads Baptist Church. She married John Lewis House Sr and gave birth to two sons. Later she moved to Dunn NC and then to Chapel Hill. Sue worked in various positions in the hospitality industry through the years including working at the Carolina Inn. It was here that she met and married her husband of twenty-five years, Richard Ambrose. They enjoyed many good times together until his death in 2001. Sue also suffered the loss of her beloved son John Lewis House Jr in 2003, of Morehead City. He was more commonly known as "Jake the Mate" a moniker bestowed upon him from his days working as a first mate along the waterfront. Sue will best be remembered for her quick quips and smiling face. She loved to interact with others and she never met a stranger. Whether in a grocery store line, a doctor's waiting room or anywhere in between, Sue was going to make someone smile. It was in her last job, serving as breakfast hostess at the Chapel Hill Hampton Inn where she truly found enjoyment. There she met people of various social standing, yet she interacted with all as a friend and quite often she welcomed them into her home. Be it a young mother with children, a coworker, an older couple, or some young person Sue befriended them and tried to help with their needs. She received awards for her outstanding service. Later, even as her health declined, Sue kept her healthcare workers laughing despite the sometimes distressful situation at hand. Sue enjoyed time spent with friends, her grandchildren and especially her great-grandson. Sue is survived by her son William "Durward" House and wife Sharon of Chapel Hill. Grandchildren Wesley House and his wife Kimberly of Chapel Hill and Caroline House and partner Dustin Balderach of Bend, Oregon and a great-grandson William House. Predeceased by sisters Alice Reynolds and Jane Haynes, Nannie Sue is survived by her loving sister Lillian Morgan and husband Barry of Jacksonville Florida. Through the years Sue enjoyed good times with Lil and her children; Iris, Gary and Roxanne. The family would like to thank her good friends Wanda Ambrose, Barry Roberts, Diane Denny and Paula Easton who have been there for Sue throughout the years. Additionally we would like to thank her healthcare providers (especially Dr. David Klein) at Duke Hospital, Hillcrest Convalescent Center and Hock Pavilion. A visitation is planned at the home of Durward House on Sunday December 28 from 4:00-8:00pm. Casual. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association in NC PO Box 220012 Charlotte NC 28222 (form online). A celebration of life will be held in Spring/Early Summer 2015.
