Hubert Donald Vickers, Sr., born June 26, 1925, in Durham, N.C., son of Henry T. and Dicy Riddle Vickers. Funeral service will be held Friday, February 18, 2011 at 12 noon at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation for friends from 10:30 until noon. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park with military honors. Mr. Vickers moved to Raleigh at an early age, attended school in Raleigh and graduated from Hugh Morson High School, attended Campbell University and N.C. State University. He was a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Navy as Motor Machinist Mate 2/C, 7th Fleet Pacific Command in years 1943-45. He served on PC 1120 ship, whose " sailors" have had reunions for several years at various cities throughout the United States- including one in Raleigh. Retired in 1990 from State of North Carolina as a code consultant in the Engineering Services Division of the Department of Insurance. He also worked with the City of Raleigh as a chief mechanical inspector. After retirement, he enjoyed many years at Indian Beach and Cape Carteret. He served many years with the Boy Scouts of America, first as a youth. In later years, he was with Troops 10 and 313 as scoutmaster. Served on Boy Scouts Council for several years, commissioned for Order of the Arrow, and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award. Also, a member of William G. Hill Masonic Lodge, Amran Temple, and the American Legion in Garner. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Raleigh, where he was a member of E.W. Jones Sunday School Class--during his extended illness its members met once monthly at his home to study the lesson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maxine Langdon Vickers, and his son, H. Donald (Don) Vickers, Jr. and wife, Leigh Wade Vickers of Greenville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Ryan Elizabeth and Reagan Leigh. Also, survived by two sisters, Helen Vickers Wright and husband, Dave and Eleanor Vickers Coley, nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by parents and brother-in-law, Richard Coley.
