I only learned of Steve's passing today. He always greeted me with a nod and his gentle smile when I went to the Hillsborough store, and I realized I had been missing that smile. I finally had to ask someone - Where is Steve? Now that I know the answer, I really miss that smile.

I was lucky enough to see Steve on a regular basis both when we worked in Weaver Street Market's Carrboro store and when he and I moved our employmnent locations to Hillsborough about 4 years ago. I loved his unassuming ways, his constant smile and his unexpected and quick sarcasm at just the right moment. There is no way to candy-coat the fact that Steve left us way, way too soon, but I am so very grateful to have known him and to have experienced life with Steve in it.
My sincere condolences to Steve's family. I know I'm not alone when I say we (all his friends) will NEVER forget Steve, his smile and the way his shoulders shook when he laughed at all of us.

Seeing Steve always brightened my day. In ten (?) years of working together I don't think I ever saw him get angry or say anything mean to anyone. I will miss him.

Steve was a good comrade in the graduate school world, and I always enjoyed seeing him at the Weave in recent years. Steve & his family have been in my prayers.

Steve was always there with a smile, a kind word, and a helping hand. WSM has lost a very important employee and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Albeit long ago and far away, many fond and happy memories I have of you my friend, Steve. As it was in life, may your soul also rest in peace. ?

My sympathies to Steve's family and friends in this difficult time. He took me to my first NASCAR race and was always a good friend during my time at UNC. We will miss you.

When all the shelf-stocking, cash-balancing, dish-washing, whining and whingeing is over, Weaver Street Market Co-operative, at the end of the day, even on its very worst day, is a very large, very close and very dysfunctional family.
And now, one of our family is dead.
I did not know Steve as well as I would have liked. We shared the same group of friends who go to the beach every year. And we stood in the same WSM Board Election, back in 2010.
What I learned then is that Steve was a gentleman. In every sense of the word. Especially in the sense that my mother meant it: he was a gentle man.
I have this overwhelming feeling that, as gentle as he was, Steve would not want us to remember him with sadness. But with a smile on his lips. For in that moment, we gave him pleasure.
God speed, Steve, and a safe journey home.
