William C. Craven

Durham

Mr. William Clayton Craven (b. June 3 1922) passed away at his home on Monday, August 10, 2015. Born in Guilford County, Mr. Craven was the son of the late Oliver Arnold Craven and Sadie Mae Spencer Craven. Mr. Craven was preceded in death by his wife, Louree Mooneyhan Craven. He was retired from a career as a salesman at Electric Supply Company and worked for many years as a car dealer transfer driver. He was 93 at the time of his demise.

Mr. Craven is survived by a son, William Clayton Craven, Jr. and his spouse Wendy; and by daughters, Dale Craven Koethe and her spouse Rob; and Alice Mikal Craven and her spouse Olivier Serafinowicz. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Zoe, Kasie, Paige, Shawn, Alice (spouse Chris), Tom, Eric, Ben and Doug as well as one great grandson, Landon.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Learning Services-Carolina Regional Campus, 707 Morehead Avenue, Durham North Carolina 27707.

William Clayton Craven (Bill) served in World War II in the 82nd Airborne Division and later served actively in the OSS. He was an avid golfer at one time breaking the record for number of consecutive rounds of golf, playing at a local course from sunup to sundown. He also enjoyed a long and productive period serving as the assistant track coach at Northern Durham high school. He was an accomplished singer and painter and regularly sang in worship services for senior citizens in local hospitals and at the Veterans Administration. He was loved by his family and his friends and neighbors and will be deeply missed.

I am sorry to hear of Bill's death. I do not know the exact history, but I believe Bill and my Dad, Wendell Jones, were great friends for more than sixty years. I recall visiting when I was young in the 1960's. Ironically Bill died on the same date as my Dad, one year later. I know Bill will be missed by his family and others that knew him.
