Dr. Jane Templeman Lewis died Saturday, March 15, 2014. She was born in Carthage, NC on October 18, 1928. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1945 with the highest scholastic average in the history of the school. In 1948 she graduated Cum Laude from Meredith College with her Bachelor's Degree and in 1961 she received her Master's Degree from the UNC Chapel Hill. In 1980 she earned an Education Specialist Degree from East Carolina University and in 1984 she graduated Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University with a Doctorate in Education Leadership.

After teaching in the Moore County Schools for 15 years she was offered a US Department of Education Scholarship to earn a Master's Degree at UNC-CH in counseling. She was offered a counseling position in the Johnston/Sampson County Schools by superintendents who were participants in the USDA Institute and remained there until she completed 37 years of employment with the state of North Carolina Public Schools.

Dr. Lewis then worked for numerous colleges and universities prior to her death: Campbell University, Fayetteville State University, Methodist University, Sampson Community College and Fayetteville Community College. Her specialization has been not only counseling but also accreditation and helping students find funds to finance higher education. She later offered students much assistance in helping match students with jobs available.

At Campbell University, Dr. Lewis has endowed three scholarships to help students finance their education. She was an active member of the Friends of Fine Arts, Charter member of the Friends of the Library, Lifetime member of the Friends of Education, member of the Wiggins Society, Phi Kappa Phi and the Campbell University National Alumni Association.

She actively participated in the following organizations: Joined SNCAE in 1944 and was active for life, active member of USA NCCA. ASCD NCSCA ASCA and was a life time member of the United Methodist Women.

She served as a District Officer and Sunday School Teacher, Conference Officer of Church Women United, member of the National Beta Club since 1944, active member of the American Association of University Women, active member of the Alumni Associations of Meredith College, UNC-CH, ECU, Vanderbilt University, Johnston Community College and Sampson County Alumni Association.

Funeral Service to be held at Newton Grove UMC, 133 South Church St. on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 pm with Rev. Scott Foster officiating, visitation to follow after the funeral service.

Graveside Service and burial will be in the family plot at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage, NC on Wednesday at 11 am.
