John Duncan Currie, Jr., 77, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, NC.

A memorial service will be held at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church Monday, July 14 at 11:00 A.M. A visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service and interment will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC, at 3:00 P.M.

Mr. Currie was born on August 5, 1936 in Fayetteville, NC, and was the son of the late John Duncan Currie and Mary Pate Currie. He was descended from the McNair and Pate families in Laurinburg and the Evans and Currie families in Fayetteville.

He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, Princeton University and Columbia Graduate School of Business. His early business career was spent in commercial banking as an officer of The First National City Bank of New York and later with The First National Bank of Atlanta. In more recent years, he was actively engaged in residential real estate in Moore County prior to his retirement.

His interests and activities were varied. He served 10 years as the Secretary of The Board of Trustees of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, was President of The Board of Visitors of St. Andrews, Treasurer of Scotia Village Retirement Center in Laurinburg, NC, long-term member of The Princeton Schools Committee, Board Member of Cape Fear Museum Historical Complex in Fayetteville, NC, and Vice-Chairman of Bethesda, Inc., Adult Half-Way House in Aberdeen, NC.

In addition, he served for 33 years as a Director of Z.V. Pate, Inc. of Laurel Hill, NC, and various related family businesses. He was a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC, and of The Dunes Club of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Survivors include his former wife, Sarah McCain Currie of Southern Pines, sister, McNair Currie Maxwell and brother-in-law Robert R. Maxwell of Rancho Palos Verdes California, sister, Virginia Currie Lyons and brother-in-law James R. Lyons and daughter, Katherine P. Lyons of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are niece Ashley Maxwell and daughter Avalon, Redondo Beach, California, and nephew, Reynolds McNair Maxwell and wife, Sonya and children Rooks and Moseley of Bend, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his niece, Virginia B. Lyons.

Mr. Currie was loved and respected by his family and all Z. V. Pate employees.
