Julie Gange Day, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend to many, died on November 11, 2013, at the Hock Pavilion in Durham, surrounded by her family. She was born December 5, 1944, in Washington D.C. She was 68 years old and had moved to Chapel Hill from Detroit in 1986.

Growing up, Julie lived in Alexandria and Charlottesville, Virginia, Switzerland, San Anselmo, California, Hong Kong and Eugene, Oregon.

She graduated from the Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts and attended the Sorbonne and the University of Oregon.

She married in 1966, and started her family in California and Colorado. She remarried in 1983 in Michigan before moving to Chapel Hill. She was known as an incredibly loving and supportive mother, devoted friend and dedicated pre-school teacher. A devout Christian, active in various local churches, and in recent years increasingly drawn to the Jewish faith, she became a member of Sha'arei Shalom, a Messianic Jewish congregation in Cary. Julie was employed as a teacher at the Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill.

Julie is survived by her five children, Abraham Cohn and his wife Amy of Chardon, Ohio, Jeremiah Cohn and his wife Edith of Beverly Glen, California, Shekinah Cohn Eliassen and her husband Peter Eliassen of Oakland, California, Adrian Day and his finance Erin Jay of Washington, D.C., and John Day of Cary. She is survived by three grandchildren, Melanie Cohn, Kelsey Cohn and Finley Rose Eliassen. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Jared Gange, his wife Virginia Loughran, and her nephews John Gange and Lars Gange.

A memorial service will be held at Sha'arei Shalom in Cary, on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 1:00pm, officiating will be Rabbi Seth Klayman. Burial will follow at 3:00 pm at Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham.

The family will receive visitors at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home in Durham, on Thursday, November 14, from 6 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
