Charles Livengood Obituary

Dr. Charles Harris "Nick" Livengood III MD

Durham

Dr. Charles Harris "Nick" Livengood III, MD, age 66, died Monday, May 9, 2016, at home. Born May 3, 1950 in Durham, the son of Charles H. Livengood Jr. and Virginia McClellan Livengood, great-grandson of Norman McLeod Johnson, Durham's first doctor, grand-nephew of William T. Blackwell. Nick enjoyed watching Durham become a city of which he was proud.

Nick attended Durham Academy when it was Calvert Method School. A 1968 graduate of Jordan High School, he was President of the Student Government Association 1967-8, and played on the 26-0 State AAA Championship Basketball team. Nick graduated Davidson College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Sciences, major in Premedicine, minor in English. He was President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a member of the Honor Council and Premedical Honor Society.

Following graduation in 1976 from Duke University School of Medicine, he served an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri, Columbia, 1976-7. Dr. Livengood completed his residency and Administrative Chief Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, 1977-81, with special appreciation of the teaching and support of Roy T. Parker MD, Charles B. Hammond MD, W. Allen Addison MD, and Donald T. Moore MD.

Dr. Livengood was appointed as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, July 1, 1981. Subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases 1981-3. Dr. Livengood was certified for life by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology 1983; awarded tenure and rank of Associate Professor in 1992; and authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific research studies and over 20 book chapters in the field of Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Livengood was inducted into membership of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1983, and served on its Executive Council and as its Membership Chairman for many years.

He founded the Chlamydia Laboratory at Duke University Medical Center in 1983, which became the first lab at Duke to offer patient results from testing based on nucleic acid amplification. Dr. Livengood continued on as Medical Director of the Duke Hospital Chlamydia/STD Laboratory. Special thanks is offered to Jane W. Wrenn ASCP for her tireless technical direction, loyalty, and organization of the laboratory to which it owed its success for over 25 years; more importantly, her support and dedication to Dr. Livengood's interests were a source of essential strength to him. He organized and directed the Annual Duke Symposium in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health for many years, and established the Cape Fear Valley/Duke Ob-Gyn Program in 1988.

Dr. Livengood served as Chief of the Gynecology Service in the Department of Surgery at the Durham Veterans' Administration Medical Center from 2005-16. Dr. Livengood was especially grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the dedicated people at DVAMC. He also served as the Medical Quality Assurance Officer of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Duke University Health Systems for many years. Special thanks to Haywood L. Brown MD for his support during these efforts.

Outside his eminent medical career, Nick served as announcer of the Durham Debutante Ball Society and Christmas Cotillion every year from 1979-2009. He joined the Board of Directors of South Durham Little League, and served as its Equipment Manager since 1998. The fine people in SDLL brought a special joy and camaraderie to Dr. Livengood for which we are grateful. He coached over 25 kids' baseball teams, which was a source of great happiness to him.

Most of all, Dr. Livengood was blessed to have a son who brought him the greatest happiness in his life. The hours they spent together on baseball fields, fishing in the ocean, walking on the beach, and just playing together, were the finest hours of his life.

It is ironic that I received this message today for I was just talking about Dr. Livengood on Friday. He never made me feel like I was just a patient but I felt as if he were also my friend. His son and my grandson were about the same age and we would often talk about them. He is still so missed by his patients and those who worked with him. I run into several of the nurses and staff and we always share a good memory. Gone but never forgotten.

I was so saddened by by his passing. He was my Dr for 15 years or more. He was always there when I needed him and helped me through many medical issues. You could tell that he truly loved his job. He was always very very compassionate and would take the time to listen instead of making you feel like just number. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Livengood was indeed a special man. I first met him when I needed some surgery in 1994. Since that time, I have traveled 5 hours round trip for my annual visits. He was so comforting and always spent extra time to make each patient feel special and more like a friend than a patient. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Nicholas, take comfort in knowing just how special your dad was to each and everyone. He always spoke fondly of you and how proud he was of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time and in the years to come.

I first met Dr. Livengood in 1990 with a health crisis. I realized after my first visit that this was a very special man and excellent Doctor.
On my visit last year, we had a long talk about his cancer and life. When I was diagones with a rare cancer, Uveal Melanoma, he gave me tremendous support. Today I learned of his passing when I called for my yearly appointment and felt the loss of a friend and wonderful Doctor. How sad it is that he will no longer be there to support his patients, family and friends.

Nicholas: You delivered such a lovely message today at your dad's service. I know he was immensely proud of you. He and my late husband were dear old friends, since they were 4 years old and Tom's parents moved across the golf course from the Livengoods. Please know that I hold you in my thoughts. Sincerely, Jacki Epperson

I will miss my Dr. Livengood. He always made me feel better about my health and was encouraging in every way. He was the only doctor who consistently sent me a written note after my yearly visit, breaking down info in an understandable way. Dr. Livengood -- you were the BEST!

Dr.Livengood was one of a kind. A gentle, kind man who practiced an "old fashioned" kind of medicine in a modern era. He treated each patient like they were special, and spent a lot of time talking to them while looking them in the eye, not the computer. It was an honor to know him and to be one of his patients. He will forever be missed.

My sincere sympathies are extended to your family in the loss of a wonderful man and doctor. I feel honored to have worked with him at the Durham VA Medical Center and to have had him as my personal physician. He was indeed a compassionate and brilliant individual and he will be missed.
May God comfort you as only He can and remember that joy does come in the morning.

I am sorry to hear of his passing. Dr. Livengood was my doctor for more than 30 years During that time, he was more than a doctor; he was also a kind friend and was concerned about not just my health but me as a person. He helped me through medical problems and was concerned about my life. We often talked about his son, who is the same age as my grandson. I thank God for having a doctor like him. I have missed seeing him and will also have fond memories of him.

He was so kind - I drove 4 hours annually - more often when needed since 1980. I thought so much of him. He was a true gentleman and a genuine physician at heart. He will truly be missed. They threw away the mold with him. He is now in God's hands with no more suffering.

Too soon. Nicest fellow, straight arrow & serious student. Always held Nick in high regard.

May 11, 2016

Nick was a brave, gentle and kind man as well as a caring, brilliant physician. He had a quick entertaining wit. I am blessed to have known him as both a friend and physician. I will miss him but have fond memories of him to keep in my heart.
